The utility of cars would plummet if they were not so subsidized by the government and society itself shrugs off externalities. People casually accept needless death from cars because it's seen as a fact of life. How do you talk about

The public needs to decide how to allocate public space: for roads, bus lanes, bike paths, or sidewalks. Even if everyone was magically given EVs tomorrow, cities would still be choked with traffic, fights for parking, and dead pedestrians

Could you apply this same argument to taxes/SSNs, drivers licenses[+], and other existing centralized systems in the US? +: Let's be honest, driver's licenses are practically required and you attract extra scrutiny if you don

Fox News circa 2000's is the best example. A huge outlier for media bias at the time but Republicans tuned in because it reinforced and validated their beliefs.

Ah, sorry, not a native. I know it was rerouted slowly over time but I guess my mental map had the canal much farther to the south than it is (aka, eating ice cream on the tow path in Pittsford).

Like Google Maps clipping off minor towns as you zoom out, there's a level of detail filter being applied. Within my town, I'll give my neighborhood. Within my state, I'll give my town. Outside that, it'll be "Bost

In terms of Erie Canal, didn't Buffalo have a bigger slice of the pie? Rochester isn't even really on the canal. Buffalo still has enormous artifacts of the canal industry, like the grain silos.

There needs to be a name for comments that are so sociopathic and terrifying that I jump in my seat. HN seems to do this more than Reddit, which is also disturbing.
