Note that in mathematics, when not otherwise specified, sets are typically compared by inclusion, not by cardinality. No mathematician would say "set Y lies between X and Z" to mean |X|<|Y|<|Z| and expect to be understood,

The standard term is "definable", not "useful": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Definable_real_number But yes, Chaitin's constant is an example of a number that is definable but not computable.

None of this is somehow secret. The standard name for this is "definable"[0]. Although, one has to be really careful with this sort of thing; there are apparently a number of subtle logical issues[1] that come up when talking ab

None of these examples are passive constructions! (The first two don't even involve verbs.) Apologies for possibly being pedantic, but I do think this is necessary to point out. A lot of people seem to think that "passive"

This is all true, but it's still a real problem that a secure messaging service with the ergonomics of email doesn't exist at the moment. No, I'm not going to use Signal instead; I mean, I do use Signal, but it has the erg

I'm going to say the same thing I said last time this came up -- so what should we use instead, then? What do we use if we want secure messaging, but with the (social) affordances of email ? There still doesn't seem to be any a

Clarification: This is about bacteria that hide inside cells to avoid the immune system; it's about how they then prevent apoptosis of the host cell, not of themselves (which wouldn't really make sense).

The map doesn't seem to show the free out-of-system transfers between Inwood 207th St and the nearby 1 stops, either. Edit: Although oddly it does show the one between Lexington Ave/63rd St and Lexington Ave/59th St. Huh.

This is not correct. I think your basic mistake here is thinking that sizes of infinite sets has to be measured by cardinality. Yes, that's one way, but usually not the most useful way; it's a very crude measure. Its only real a

My understanding is that's not really a sum type, though -- e.g., you couldn't use it to add a type to itself, only to add distinct types to each other.

We're talking about genetic therapies that would make cells less prone to mutating into cancerous cells. This would have no effect on cells that are already cancerous, introduced from an outside source.

No, the tumor is the cells growing out of control, not some separate thing that acts on the genes of nearby cells. Once cells have mutated into a tumor, it's a bit late to make them less prone to doing so.

No. It's not a -> f a. It's * -> *. There is no a -> f a here. You are simply mistaken in thinking that any such thing is part of the definition of a functor.
