You should feel a distinct click when you plug in your connector. I never had any problem with my laptop. What you described can be caused by lint inside your USB-C port. I had this problem only with my phone. Try to get it out with a tooth

You shouldn't run it parallel to the electrical line, because it will generate interference. Other than that it's pretty straightforward.
