I'm not really sure what's so disgusting about it. Anyone with a pair of eyes can see that Samsung have been systematically pushing the boundaries of what you get away with in cloning a design. If Apple didn't show willingness to push back

Funny, because I work in the content industry and don't regard myself as being ripped off. Box office & DVD sales pay my rent.

I think in the past the 'Don't be evil' thing as an informal company ethos was ok, and people respected that as a target. Then they started using this as a stick to beat their competitors with and it had the result of putting their own cond

Great, but how are you planning on paying the rest of the production, which after all makes up the majority of that $200 million.

Now your twisting things - I didn't claim I have no ambition to help 'anyone', I said I have no ambition to devote my time to charity work. If that makes me a bad person in your eyes, I guess I'll have to learn to live with it. Also, there

People look up to Jobs because he managed to achieve the ambitions of many here without giving up his principals. I personally have no burning ambition to cure malaria, does that make me a bad person also?

If you reduce your price by 10x then you need to attract 10x as much custom to break even. I don't think it's a given at all that moving to internet streaming and ultra cheap pricing is going to be good for business.

Yes, I'm aware of this. But I don't think lumping fair use in with people downloading torrents makes a lot of sense. Hollywood want complete control over all access and distribution of their content, while the Pirate Party want copyright ab

If we are talking about wealth in the broadest sense, as discussed by PG in the link below then I certainly class copying a DVD that you haven't purchased as profiting, yes. http://paulgraham.com/wealth.html I don't think anyone realistic

So you're saying the difference is that the perpetrator intends to profit from copying? Surely by copying a movie for personal use you are still profiting, if not by much.

Whether somebody buys a copy or makes it himself also isnt up to debate here. The question is whether copying itself against the wish of the author should be illegal or not. Copying can be legal and you'd still have people buying copies to

Why should we? We don't hold referendums on every other issue. I'm not sure you'd like a world where politics was entirely reduced to the lowest common denominator as much as you think you would.

The key difference here is you're talking about commoditizing human creativity, which is what a large fraction of a typical film budget is paying for.

Sure, I know they get used for reference and elements. Getting a lower quality plate just increases the post production costs anyway so it's generally a false economy. That said, digital is certainly here to stay and the cost of professiona

Honestly, what do you think YCombinator can bring to the table that isn't already there? How exactly do you propose to disrupt something you know nothing about? It's the equivalent of the head of the MPAA saying 'Fuck it, we'll build our ow

Do you know what's involved in making high end mass-market entertainment as produced by Hollywood or the games industry? A massive amount of work by large groups of very talented, highly qualified, incredibly hard working people. You see, u

The problem with this discussion is that it's an echo chamber for people who know nothing about the film industry. For people who do (a few of whom are valiantly trying to impart some perspective), most of the posts here are laughably naive

Disclaimer: I work in film. This discussion is very strange. Hollywood films are extremely expensive and difficult to make, do you think the studios would spend all that money and effort if they could get the same return of investment knock

I don't buy that line of argument at all. You're claiming that if you can establish some line of cause and effect then anyone in that chain must take moral responsibility for the outcome. That's like saying an author who writes something th

The thing that always brings this home to me is how much harder it is (for a developer) to rethink a design to remove the need for an option than to not bother and defer the decision to the user. It's sometimes instinctual in these situatio

I think that's unfair. While WP7 obviously is derived from the 'physics based touch screen phone' category that the iPhone defined, it's also true that Microsoft took it in a different direction that genuinely looks different to iOS. They b
