I don't think I do understand, no. What does Hacker News not being written in C have anything to do with the discussion? Weren't we talking about iPhone apps? Maybe I am wrong, I'm always happy to hear a different perspective at least.

You didn't address my point. Pretty much all of the best known and regarded applications are written in a C variant, including the browser you're viewing this on. On the iPhone, pretty much all of the best applications are written in a C va

By writing in inferior languages, you are creating apps with more bugs that take up more developer time (leaving less time to fix bugs, update older apps, etc). By your own claims, this means your apps will be dismissed. It's a mistake. I

You're inferring engineering decisions based on product outcomes. You have no idea how the various extensions you describe were implemented, and with what regard to future extension. For example many people claimed early on that iOS 'didn't

C64s weren't so bad. I remember reading an interview with, I think, Geoff Crammond (author of the class Stunt Car Racer) where he said the C64 (in comparison to the Amiga) was the last machine where you actually could know every last trick

The whole "writing low level code is faster" mentality is WRONG for 99% of apps. I read this a lot but I don't know where it comes from. For me, 'fast enough' in terms of subjective performance of an application is 'as fast as the current

I've read this argument a few times and the part I don't follow is how you can figure out the odds for an event (the spontaneous occurrence of life) that has only happened once to our knowledge. For all we know the odds are 1e100 to one.

I wouldn't describe the webapp as great. Since it attempts to emulate aspects of UIKit it suffers greatly from the uncanny valley effect. The performance and feel is poor compared to a native app. I realise it's more convenient for Google,

If the job of being in government was just to ask the people what they want and then deliver it, being a politician would be very simple. In reality people want a lot of things, some of which may be incompatible (lower taxes/better services

Are you inferring it's not possible to read material from a non-approved source on the iPad or iPhone? Because that's not the case. Neither is it the case with videos or music for that matter.

Just as a data point, the TomTom turn by turn apps have been consistently in the top 5 paid apps over the last several years here in the UK. You could argue that's even more reason for Apple to provide their own solution of course.

The claim wasn't that he was a genius because he endorses his own products (I wasn't claiming he was a genius in the first place). I was refuting the claim that the manipulation of customers was one of his primary skills.

As you say, no more so than the average CEO. In fact, you could argue that for a while now his product unveilings were relatively spin free, since when he'd say "Isn't this great?" he actually believed it.

I think you're being very presumptuous about what his role was at Apple. You're portraying him as nothing more than an exacting editor, yet there's plenty of evidence to suggest he contributed ideas and direction to Apple's products. And as

But the point is, they SHOULDN'T have to compromise. That's just Apple deciding what people will use, even if it's the wrong thing. It's taking a little bit of good advice to such an extreme that what appears on the surface "visionary" wou

I'm not sure why Google would make much more in Adsense revenue on Android than they would on iOS. I think the primary issue is not conceding control of the platform their revenue is reliant on to a competitor.
