I don't see why the irresponsible maintainership of PIL should reflect badly on Python 3. Pillow is a fork of PIL which was created to address some of these problems: http://pypi.python.org/pypi/Pillow#why-a-fork

It's a problem which we're mainly trying to solve with visibility. We have a HipChat bot (which shares commit messages, Jenkins feedback etc), and we're considering having it just post "What are you working on" into the group chatroom once
