The only union experience I have was that the whole concept of performance based compensation was something to fight to the teeth (in France, 12y ago). The pay structure was almost exclusively seniority-based.

"on top of the current master" is limiting: how do you handle concurrency? I.e. two developers kicking tests on their PR on top of current master, everything green, but they merge and the result of their merge is not building (or

"quality of living" is all relative, I'm from France and one of the reason I don't want to go back is that I don't want to live in Paris (and outside of Paris the job opportunities aren't really there). With my

The problem is still the context in which cinebench would be ran. There are so many variable on a complex system that "the microcode killed cinebench perf" could very well be an over simplification of "the microcode in conjun

If the worker are so important to the business, then they already have power and they don’t need directors. My impression of similar system in France where unions attempt to represent the worker was rather bitter. They act in the interest o

I’m puzzled by what you mean here: you refer to an x87 instruction, which makes me think it is assembly/binary level and then you’re saying that a library function is called. Where is the magic? Is there an x86 feature where you can in

I'm not an expert in keyboard, I'm just a software developer that spends a bunch of time in front of a computer: I had some adjustment period to the new keyboard but now I'm used to it and it feels perfectly fine. What is the

Having worked on a floor with individual (or dual) offices, and now being in an open-space for over a year, I personally feel a lot more collaborative in an open-space environment.

I'm curious (and ignorant): how can Europe fine an organization like ICANN? I can imagine that they can forbid them to do any business in Europe if they don't pay their fine, anything else? If it come to this, what does it mean fo

I stayed a few years for a few reasons, first because it is still a good company with a “real” product, and also because 99% of my time there was spent working on open-source (clang/llvm). When I decided to quit, it was in part because

Pushing this way of thinking about it, you could also say that a raid from the police is useless in general since a judge can simply send a request compelling the company to turn over the evidence in the first place.

No sure I get the question: static_assert can only invoke constexpr functions, and constexpr functions can only call themselves other constexpr functions. Since IO functions are not constexpr, you can't call them there.

No: the purpose of constexpr is that the compiler would issue an error if a constexpr function contains such side-effects.
