Alex - I wanted to use Chyrp as an alternative to WordPress last year (before I went back to my own blog system) but, as you may recall, had problems with stability after importing my 15k+ comments. Is this issue resolved now?

"A clone of stackoverflow.com to be done over the course of the weekends" Weekends plural? I thought this was only going to take 1?

Agreed. My partner is an IT technician at a school. His friends list has a lot of ex/current pupils & some of the things he sees published make me blush!

They don't work for me either, but we're in a minority. The non-techies seem to love HTML email. My boss, even, receives all sorts of crappy offers and adverts and forwards them on to me to "check out the bargain!" We have clients that pay

I find myself doing some of these without even realising. I don't think that makes me a slacker, I just don't like people walking all over me.

Given the current problems the British government are having holding the country together, an apology to Alan Turing is NOT something I want them to be thinking about. Don't get me wrong, I am 100% for gay rights, laws against discriminatio

What makes it annoying? (I'm asking out of genuine curiousity, not because I use it.)

Right, because insinuating anyone who uses mibbit is incapable of installing an IRC client is not a sniping remark? I have no problem with basic aptitude tests. I have no problem with restricting a community to the technically literate. Wha

Elitist cack. I can think of several times I've used mibbit to pop in to #startups (or another channel on another network) because installing an IRC client just isn't possible (lack of admin rights, on someone else's computer, etc).

Why the generalisation? You don't speak for me. It's just as easy for me to type /server irc.mibbit.net over /server irc.freenode.net - no forcing involved.

I won't disagree with its questionable legality, but it would be a bit silly to have an advert that wasn't biased towards the product it was advertising.

I know at least 3 couples (all 3 brides are web geeks) getting married in the next year or so - not sure of dates but I'll pass this on.

Echoing that. I have 6 Mint licenses, and have recommended it to several clients. It's good stuff.

Good point. Are they Australian though? I can't seem to find an equivalent contest in the UK or US. Edit: scratch that, just saw your comment above saying you're Aussie. :)

I'm posting this here because I'd love to see HN's reaction to this competition. (Not because I want any of you to download IE8!) I think it's an outrageous way of trying to pull in users. Can't attract legitimate IE8 downloaders? Bribe the
