Because of the subject matter, there's a lot of anger and bitterness in that subreddit, and people make a lot of sweeping generalisations. There's not much point getting into my specific opinions, everyone has to make up their own

I agree. With something like a job offer that requires a bit of contemplation before going ahead, email is clearly the better method of communication. Usually after these calls they end up emailing over the job description anyway. I can onl

It has helped me understand why my marriage failed and made me realise how I need to behave differently when I start dating again. I must admit, a lot of the commenters there have extreme views and some of them come across as misogynists. H

I was the same with Elite as a kid (although I never actually reached 'Elite'!). There was something about that game that made it so immersive. I wasn't just playing a game, for a few hours a day I was a hard-bitten space tra

Related question: I've seen several comments on HN and elsewhere about how bad the dating scene is (for guys) in Silicon Valley / "Man Francisco". I'm curious, is it really that bad? I'm assuming Seattle has si

Ha! If we assume the goal of such research is to improve patient care (rather than grab headlines) then is there any benefit to comparing demographic groups like this? If the hypothesis is that female doctors get better outcomes because the

Good point about not correcting for medical speciality. I'm neither a doctor nor a statistician, but surely that pretty much invalidates the whole thing?

Indeed, I wish we could get rid of this idea that it's so hard to fire people in the UK, and stop using it to justify low pay. Before that 2 year milestone you can basically be summarily dismissed. The probation period is meaningless.

Too late to edit so I'm replying to my own comment. I also wanted to mention that there is a place where the Lord of the Flies approach has been taken to its logical extreme, in a long-running experiment which continues to this day. Th
