Great comment, I'd like to add: Industrial-scale data guzzling is exactly like every vicious playground rumour (or vindictive people you may still be unlucky to know). Think back to school and remember how the bullies never forgot. How

My grandmother wouldn't give her bank details to anyone . She paid all her bills at the bank, cash in hand. She only had a phone line put in in the early 90s. I thought it was extreme at the time, but now who is laughing?

I certainly notice this too. I remember searching for technical queries and would find many (not SEOsplurge) blog posts or random forums where the question is discussed. Now it is just the same stackoverflow answer replicated across multipl

This will come in handy for when someone finally cracks time travel. Time to brush up on the old Latin. And divest from all holdings in Pompeii.

Sorry to hear of these experiences, it should be that you get recognition when you devote a lifetime to a field. But I wonder if this is mostly a US-centric phenomenon. Or maybe it is a tribal mentality, I wonder if web devs of 20 years ago

Yeah seconded. I've been lucky enough to know the names from religious education, but if someone has actually done research to show how they eventually helped make British liberalism, I'd like to read that too. But what I recall w

There is truth in this, it increasingly appears that we've just swapped God for the state. Even if the fall of religion was inevitable in the West, a source of objective values distinct from the state hasn't really emerged. "

I recently looked into LJ, it looks to be a better take on social media than many things that came after. Many ancient blogs are still live, documenting daily struggles and ramblings from 2003. It could be written into social history.
