I once heard that a lot of mental illness originates because no one would come along and say, 'what happened in your childhood was evil', because adjusting to an irrational environment is maddening and leaves deep scars. It's not the only cause but it is a question that isn't given enough attention. If we don't even properly understand the causes, then how can we hope to find a solution?
