Isn't the easy answer virtual child porn? I really see no reason why this is also illegal except it makes people feel icky. This allows potential rapists to satisfy their desires without harming any actual children.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen. I'm saying that the risk-reward ratio is way too skewed for me to give it a second thought.

No... one is abhorrent and takes a significant toll on someone too young to know what is even happening. The other is sex between to consenting, able-minded people. Conflating the two is dangerous, offensive, and just plain stupid.

Yea so? I'll see your anecdote with the dozen or so unexpected deliveries I've received in the past few months. How do you reasonably protect yourself from an expected package that turns out to be contraband? Anway, that was some horrific p

As sudonim pointed out, there are some really gross abuses of the whole sex offender system. I've heard of a lot of people that are in there for terrible reasons. I definitely agree with the author to some extent. We do seem to be inordinat

Really? I think you're being a bit hyperbolic here as my chances of getting a surprise gift are far better than the odds of me getting set up with cocaine.

As a vegetarian, I constantly have to suffer through idiotic arguments based on headlines like this. I know this happens in all areas of life, but this is definitely the one to which I am exposed most often and it drives me absolutely nuts.

Sigh... I think my job hits just about all of them. Although I think that would disqualify it from being a "good job". Follow up needs to be "Why Good People Stay at Bad Jobs".

I stopped reading at the word "art". And then I started reading again. Larry took it in a different direction that I presumed and it's certainly an interesting claim to make. I'm just not really sure if I buy it... It sounds to me like drop

What's funny is just how simple these algorithms are. All it really took was something looking at this from a slightly different perspective. The best optimizations I've done at my job have been exactly that. Looking at things a little diff

Does anyone know how this objectively stacks up to Ssiri? I'm stuck on an older version of Android right now and I've seen some of Siri's shortcomings first-hand. So I've got to wonder... Someone should do a side-by-side.

I'm really glad to see all the similar sentiments. I'm 26 now and I didn't start programming until I was 18 as well. It took me another year or two to change my to computer science. I still feel a bit like I missed out in college because it

I'm always a bit disappointed by these kinds of UIX posts. As droithomme pointed out it's vague, but still in a way too specific. I've found that pretty much all of these guides are extremely specific to blogs and the web in general (with g

Maybe some of the disconnect is the fact that we're talking about different countries. Veal is quite different here, and I don't think it's a matter of strict definitions. It's just a matter of efficiency and what people like. Here are some

Well I for one care about the treatment of other living creatures especially when weighed against what is essentially a luxury product. If you're really concerned about the living conditions, you'd want more expensive, better quality milk.

Dairy is not really a cheap source of protein. Most vegetable sources are cheaper - pulses and whole grains. >It is, however, annoying that the price has gone up by about 22% in the last 10 years. No, it's really not that annoying. Many

Oh yeah that's particularly scary (if you happen to like bananas). Most commercial bananas plants are clones. This leads to strict regulations on commercial bananas and it's still pretty likely we'll see them disappear one day.

Not to run off on a tangent, but you're wrong about the dairy beef comparison. Before heading to a feedlot, most beef cattle spend around a year of their lives grazing often allowed to stay with their mothers. Beef cattle are killed much so

I realize I'm coming at this from a different angle than a lot of other HNers, but for me this is good science gone wrong. Dairy cows are some of the most mistreated and unhealthy animals in the agriculture system. This push for efficiency
