PCF is for those working at scale, and doesn't suit trivial deployments well.

I'm not sure that two of the world's richest companies investing is great sign of confidence. If their investment comes to nought, it wouldn't make a dent in their balance sheet.

I find it easier to live with if you consider it to mean "daemonless". So not about hardware, but what software you don't have in your project.

There seem to be a lot of stories with a negative view of China on HN.

The global log sounds like a lynchpin but I didn't see a good explanation in the article. It sounds like all synchronization is done at the level of this log? If so, isn't that a bit of a bottleneck?

Why are "open offices are bad" stories so popular on HN? I've only ever worked in open plan offices, and can't say I've ever had a problem concentrating. I'm not sure what alternatives are popular, but if an em

I have some sympathy, having made an indie game that gave a return of about £0.07/hour. Sold a few thousand copies, learnt a lot, made a lot of friends and had a lot of fun, but it certainly wasn't a great financial decision. And

The Secret Life Of Waves. It made me think differently about life, the universe and the nature of complex systems. I also found The Brain with David Eagleman a series that gave me revelations about all sorts of things.

I recommend reading Judea Pearl's _The Book Of Why_, which details why historically science has been restricted to correlational observations, and how causal calculus can shed light on causality.

"sew their chaos"? I'm curious - I would've expected this to be "sow" as in "sowing seeds". Is this an American spelling?

We ask people to pair-program with an interviewer on a realistic task. No tricks, no brainteasers. We just get to see how people do the job we want them to do.

Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb has implications that I find impact very disparate areas. It's hard work in places though. The Quark and the Jaguar by Murray Gell-Mann is a wonderfully readable and accessible intro to complexity,

You can buy effective faraday pouches for car keys in many places. I have one, and can attest they work. They are no thicker than any other fabric. I've not tried it for my phone though.
