Theft will eventually result in even less pay over time. Both sides need to respect each other. In my case a dev was paid very well and given tons of freedom, and screwed me. I’m not some huge company making bank here.

Totally agree with almost everything you say. But there are lines both sides should not cross. For employers it’s exploitation (don’t expect unpaid work) and for employees it’s theft (don’t take pay for no work). If we can’t agree on tha

I am probably missing the point of this. Didn’t we have stuff like this back in the 80’s with phone couplers and modems?

I’m hanging onto this post for the next time I see people on their high horse about integrity among engineers. The fact is, some people have it and some don’t, regardless of job. This makes me sad. Economically it makes sense, but it’s a

Industrialization was slow - it took many decades to happen, so people could adapt. I don’t see us having that luxury of time.

Yes. One of my pet peeves is when I read articles that say “but now we know…” I mean progress is good, but we always think we know everything when something new is figured out. Seems like it’s never the case - there is always more we don

That is true, and if it does the same, then asking about a job gets you there 15 minutes sooner. It’s an optimization.

I don’t think the parent has disdain, but rather experience. I’ve had my eyes opened wide by getting to know some people at the bottom of the economy. A 50 year old man who has basically no skills other than manual labor. There are peopl

Love or hate the job, knowing what it is gives you insights/guesses into skillsets, education level, economic level, possibly the type of people they mingle with, etc, etc.

You seem to be a Google apologist. Just because a platform is currently the biggest and most dominant hardly means it has trust and love. YouTube is the Windows of video platforms.

This is just an anecdote, but I’ve had multiple “10 year” LED bulbs fail after just a year or two. I suspect much of the claims for these bulbs are theoretical as they just don’t hold up, probably for reasons the grandparent poster is poin

Probably not. Business owners are running a business, not doing deep research on their bank (one of the larger ones!), their electric company, the water and sewage company, the landlord, printer supplies company, caterer, ISP, all cloud pr

So I have to prove what was stolen from ME, but others have to prove what was stolen from people 2-8 generations back? Notice how your examples of reparations are to those who were directly harmed, which seems fair. Saying I owe someone fo

I’m not convinced. What about all of my ancestors that got paid less than inflation adjusted minimum wage? Who were killed in wars fighting to keep the country free? Lots of people benefit from their work, so do I get a slice of the pie?

I’ve always thought reparations have to be balanced against all of the benefits folks have gained from being born in the US in the 20th/21st century vs being born in Liberia (for example). Any economic help (unemployment, food stamps,

I really hate this quote: “Why buy the cow when the milk is free?”. Having said that, sex is a huge bonding element for those who won’t have sex outside of marriage. Everyone else misses out on that element, and are paying for it.

I don’t understand - how is it not a server port? When a datagram arrives from the network it’s addressed to the server’s IP and a port (and from a client IP and port). How is the data delivered to the correct socket if not through the 5-
