Seems analogous to "people on the left" and "left progressives". Both sides have their extremist branches.

It's amusing to read Orwell's The Road to Wigan Pier in 2018 and learn that 100 years ago bolshevism was in big fashion among the English bourgeois youth, and Lenin was considered one of the greatest men alive. This is even after

Exactly, "controversial" is a mostly relative notion, almost always with respect to the local majority opinion.

Note I'm not defending a "cultural fit test" here. I don't even know what that means, it's an amorphous concept with few specifics, everybody defines it how they want. My point is that from day 1 you have to protect

The candidate can also be toxic and unprofessional, this is a two-way street. What if the company doesn't want to bring "sexism, bullying and worse" into the group?

Why is that? I'm out of the loop.

Somewhat unrelated, but I'm really not a fan of that single hard flash look in the two photos of the Lego staff. Looks like they were going for something grungy and gritty, but it didn't get executed that well.

Was curious how that experiment was going to turn out, been following it for a few years. Not unexpected result, although I was going to give it more of a 60/40 in my mind.

Yep, it's not a very well known fact to the public, but most of the influencers with 5-10M+ followers you see are easily 90% fake accounts, especially if these people have no real fan-base to draw upon outside of IG. If you're Dra

Doesn't look like the "slave" as etymology theory is confirmed: >>> Medieval Latin, from Late Latin Sclavus, from Byzantine Greek Σκλάβος (Sklábos), probably from the Greek verb σκυλάω (skuláō), a variant of σκυλεύω

In addition to the violence aspect, there's also total power asymmetry in bigoteering. Calling someone a Nazi, a white supremacist, a racist, a bigot, a homophobe, a xenophobe, a misogynist, a transphobe, a cultural appropriator, whate

One could argue they were "punching a nazi" of their time. The establishment of a dictatorship of the working class was a mission for which no human sacrifice was too great. Obviously we're nowhere near that in modern US, BUT

Yep, at this point I, and I imagine many others, have experienced first-hand that HN is not the right place to be having this sort of discussions. There's a certain orthodox Overton window to the conversation here, and stepping outside

If it's ahistorical, you have the option to provide evidence to the contrary that disproves the facts stated above. Instead what I'm seeing is ad-hominem bigoteering that attempts to ascribe bad faith, nefarious motives to someone

Interesting contrast to the recent wave of posts about how you should absolutely not go for academia in the current market of having 1 job spot for every 3 PhDs. What's one to make of this?
