I have noticed a definite shift in the jobs on HN’s job board. Either they are hiring outside of the U.S., or they want you near SF/NY/Seattle. The job itself might be listed as “remote U.S.” but if you dig into the details, they

Liquidation preferences make a difference to the math here. For example, a 3x liquidation preference would guarantee the investors the first $9 million of proceeds from any exit in the $3 million investment example.

If it were me, I’d just rebuild the site manually on something like Squarespace (or maybe Shopify) by copying-and-pasting the text and downloading/uploading any images you want to keep. I didn’t see any interactive features in my brief

Maybe you are correct. But ICs do not decide what to work on, the PMs and other leadership do. So why can’t ICs continue working from home while the “deciders” go back to the office?

Unless the person has spent their entire career working with React, I see no contradiction here. Or do you think that any experience outside of React doesn’t count?

No, the article says that total IT employment increased by 700 jobs last year. The first derivative declined but was still positive (barely), so the second derivative was negative.

There’s a job board for companies that share certain values with respect to how they treat their employees that comes to mind: https://peoplefirstjobs.com/ But I’m not sure if this fits what you are asking for exactly.

So your company did a rewrite using platform X? Interesting. I think being in that situation requires a bit of luck. Many companies (understandably) don’t want to or can’t afford to rewrite their legacy code. I still don’t see how learning

Sure, you can learn new platform X well enough to be productive in probably a matter of days, but you can’t manufacture 3 years of experience with platform X unless you lie about it. And many job postings expect you to not only have years o

We have too few coders? Then explain why job openings are getting hundreds of applicants in the first few hours and auto-rejecting people with many years of experience. I think you are mistaken.

I was struggling with something like this. The two things that helped me most were: (1) Discontinuing or cutting back on medications that cause lymphedema. For me, this meant quitting Flonase (a corticosteroid) and limiting my use of NSAIDs

My dad preferred to work the night shift because it was less stressful at his workplace. He tried day shift a couple of times, but always ended up going back to nights by choice. For that reason, I have trouble agreeing with your suggestion

Do you mean the “founding engineer” jobs? It can be misleading, but those are not founder roles. They are regular employee roles where the “founding” part of the title is just an honorary indication that the person joined the company early.

If you want a simple website for, say, a local business, then a service like Squarespace or Shopify probably does what you want. Programming ability may not be necessary. If you want something much more custom than that built from scratch,

I assume that it would “matter” to you if somebody shot up a class of kindergarteners at your local elementary school. That’s what I mean by “matter.” Maybe you are right and we’re all just selfish and driven by our own desire to survive, b

The ability to experience pleasure and pain seems important. If we’re just input/output mechanisms, then why would killing somebody even matter?

Earlier today, there was a tweet from Sam claiming that large tech companies are saying that young engineers right out of college are now better engineers than the older and more experienced engineers thanks to generative AI. The statement

Maybe what you are saying is true in emergency medicine, but it’s very easy to rack up thousands per year in non-emergency medical care. If someone’s doctor orders, say, an echocardiogram or an MRI done, typically that patient is going to w

I have heard it claimed that people did not used to include the basement in the square footage of a home, which leads to some apples and oranges comparisons in these kinds of statistics. But I’m not sure if it’s true.

I didn’t realize that I am only “allowed” to make comments with a short time horizon. Anyway, I wasn’t trying to give investment advice or make a concrete prediction. I’ve just seen a lot of people say that prices will never go down … and

This observation is a bit morbid (apologies!), but it seems like the eventual deaths of baby boomers could put downward pressure on prices. Someone born in 1955 would be smack in the middle of that generation, with an average expected death

If you like programming enough to do it professionally, then it might make sense to do a master’s degree in CS. Otherwise, in your position, I would try to talk my way into working at a small startup. There’s often enough work to go around

I am very sorry (but, unfortunately, not surprised) to hear that. I hope that you’re doing okay. It seems we are paying more than ever for less-than-ever access to medical care.

Also, in my area, you get to wait 2 months to see your primary care doctor even if you are an established patient. You will most likely either be recovered or dead by the time your appointment arrives (unless you have a chronic illness).

I think we’re meant to assume that the people can only leave rooms on the quarter hour and can only move to an adjacent room (arriving 15 minutes later) if they do move. But those are very odd assumptions indeed, particularly since they are
