That one wiped me out for a week too, and caused borderline psychological problems. Ultimately though I realised that if I followed the description word by word, and made no assumptions, then I got the right solution. Still, a nightmare: yo

Any game you play, particularly the ones running through distribution platforms like Steam, is wired up with enough telemetry that it would make Windows 10 blush. And they run with full privilege a lot of the time, too. So if you are on Win

Didn't the US blow up 30 afghani civilians a few months ago with drone strikes? Didn't even make the front page. We all make deals with monsters for economic safety, or because there is near nothing we can do about it. That includ

Best part of this article is the linked medium post by Pat Ker. That was a good read: https://medium.com/@patkerr/why-i-think-xkcd-is-wrong-about-... . Less 'XKCD is wrong and stupid!' and more 'its not t

Seems like the worst case scenario would be that some sites would be able to remove or prevent everything the administration doesn't agree with, and yet not be targeted by your FCC, while other sites would have to accept every contradi

You are not wrong. In fact I would argue it would be very hard to learn F# without knowing C# even if resources did not assume you did, since one of F#'s major strengths is the ability to use the entire .NET ecosystem just like Clojure

F# hits all his 'perfect language' points for me. It feels like a more concise, opinionated and beautiful refinement of C#.

Probably something like a how-to guide to hack into a specific site. An analogy might be that a video on how to lockpick a door wouldn't be banned, but a video on how to lockpick your neighbour's door (with his/her address) p

This comment thread says a lot about hacker news. a) the flagged videos have already been unbanned, with YT saying it was a mistake and b) YT's policy exempts educational videos, which is why it was a mistake, and why e.g LiveOverflow

You should have a go at F#. OCaml-like syntax, strong type system, and like Clojure sits in a large reusable ecosystem (in this case .net). Cross platform in dotnet core too.

Yeah, sorry. dotnet core to me has been an attempt by MS to not just get cross platform, but also to rewrite everything to get rid of the old kludges. Simple CLI, simple fsproj files, easy nuget, no differences on linux/osx/window

Right now, there is a transition between net framework and net core in the MS .net world, which causes plenty of confusion to newcomers. Which is sad, because the clean, .net core way is the simplest thing in the world: 1. Install the dotne

Interesting that he did all this, and did F# in his free time. The F# community has been almost 100% positive and welcoming in my experience, which is impressive given how many people come to it with no functional experience and so make a l

Being very careful not to start a flamewar, my armchair analysis is the opposite: JS has seen a large influx of serious backend developers, who generally have no time for silly arguments against static typing.

How. Dare. You. More seriously, JS has had its own resistance movements. TypeScript was actively disdained until, as far as I can tell, Angular switched to it. Probably partially because it was MS, but also because there was a lot of resist

Not sure what apps you are talking about. The modern web loads immediately, then slowly snaps in user controls and buttons. Instead of pressing something and having an immediate response, now you press a button and if you are lucky, the laz

Adding it to dotnet core by default certainly helps I think. I didn't start learning it until recently, but when I did having it part of the tools I use every day was awesome.

THE CYCLE IS COMPLETE! More seriously, looking forward to when CLR can compile down to web assembly directly rather than requiring a large runtime. Baby steps.

Its baked into ASPNET Core, and its still a pain in the ass. Even though the middleware handles JWT validation, cookie storage, redirects etc (which are a big part of it) there are still a tonne of little details to OAuth that clients need

Its part of dotnet core, so you don't need Mono installed. And you can build a self-contained dotnet core application so you don't need core installed to run it. AOT is possible via something like CoreRT, but its still a bit beta

Or to be even mooooooore pedantic the fsharp functions would probably be written to be seq<'a> -> seq<'a>, so that would be Func<IEnumerable<T>, IEnumerable<T>> where T : IComparable<T> :)
