I don't think that these HN posts can be dismissed as cyclic griping and finger pointing / laughing. 1. Any company that produces bad UI should be called on it, particularly when that UI is going to impact such a large number of people. 2

ouch, the downvotes! for posterity let me note here that, in fact, I really did have to clean vt220 keyboards with alchohol wipes every week when working in the comp. lab. I have very fond memories of the vt220 despite this ignoble responsi

Based in HK for a long time, spent lots of time working in SG as well and have family there now. We've talked about going back there too. I like what they've done to push cultural development (something HK never did effectively or serious

Let's be clear about this: a terminal is what you have to disinfect Friday nights in the computer lab after a week of disgusting freshmen. Wikipedia is sorely lacking in this critical detail.

Funny, my wife, friends and I were making a short-list of some reasonable US alternatives last night (we've both lived much of our lives outside the US though are in it now) and all our top picks were cold, northern, and civilized. Norway w

Worth noting that several dual-citizenship friends have, over the last couple years, renounced US citizenship for tax reasons in each case. Very little appealing about being a US citizen for the very rich. What this article fails to note is

You can add a variety of two factor authentication options to lastpass (phys OTP, yubikey). You can also allow/disallow "offline" access to your lastpass account when using these two factor options (force second factor at all times or allow

If I was going to bootstrap a lock company, I'd start by presenting my designs at hacker conferences and offering bounties for exploits, just like an opensource project. Manufacturers really should embrace this kind of testing.

Yes, plus Linus is relevant and important for both linux and git. Git has been hugely, positively disruptive in a way no Dvcs was prior. And anyone (cnn evidently) that thinks Linux developers are fungible misses the point of having a fie

I hadn't thought to call them privateers, but it's an excellent comparison. You've hit the nail on the head. The next wars will be waged by private contractors and privateers, hovered over by swarms of drones. Replace "will" with "is" whene

The difference now is that we are entering a period where it's not just houses. 3d printing is suddenly a real thing. That's the play here.

CAD today is like video editing 10 years ago: lots of legacy high-end pro level tools, faced with increasing consumer-friendly competition. I used to cut on Avid, for instance. They made a push into consumer tools too-little, too-late. I'm

I use Hakyll & Pandoc to maintain a single README in github which is also the webpage for Solarized. A little sed magic in Hakyll converts the github links. Makes life much easier.

I've had some questions about the matte screen and will post this here for reference. I've compared it to my matte cinema display and my glossy cinema display. It's not as matte as the 'actual' matte display, but the x220 with multitouch la
