I bought an LG OLED TV couple of months ago during the Cyber Monday sale. > but the TV was absolutely packed with ads via the home screen and pop-up toasts. To add insult to injury, the home screen would lag for several seconds at boot w

How are you trying to move off such that it’s “taking forever”? Did you consider exporting your data from LastPass and importing the file into something like Bitwarden or KeePassXC?

Think someone at Hacker News should write up a blog post about lessons it learnt moderating this community.

I am not laid off yet but the org I am part of, in one of the FAANGs, is rumored to have layoffs in December or Q1 next year. I have been with this company for almost a decade, am one of the top performers and think I am close to a promotio

I went all-in on Tailscale couple of years ago but slowly (and painfully) moving away from it. It's a fantastic service but with a big flaw: its iOS app eats battery like crazy. I didn't know about it until I accidentally saw it o

I am reading Crafting Interpreters right now. It seems to be a solid book but I am curious how others read it? Do you reproduce all, or most, the code yourself? That’d be a great way to make everything stick but makes progress terribly slow

I’ve read similar narrative before on Reddit (while I was trying to decide Logseq vs Obsidian a few weeks ago). But I don’t get it. When you open Logseq, you start with bullet points. Is that the only thing that pushes you to create more? I

You can configure snapshots for at least a few months, maybe more. Just that those for the first 7 days are free.

Consider Forward Email instead of Cloudflare: their free tier is pretty good and they allow forwarding to multiple emails. Not affiliated with them, just a happy user myself.

How’s Syncthing’s iOS situation these days? Does the app work well?

+1 to Nextcloud. It works really well and you own the data completely. Office document editing experience isn’t the best on mobile but I don’t use that feature anyway. Markdown editing works well.

That’s the thing - I use Firefox, wife uses Safari. One home page internal to our home is perfect.

One, my URLs look like http://home.box:8442 , so they aren’t easy to remember when you have a few devices. Two, I need to communicate the same to my wife and so, if the solution were bookmarking, we’d both have to do those. Tools

I was just telling my wife earlier today that Amazon considers search filters as mere suggestions from the user. Often times, they don’t even honor price filters properly.

Well, I don’t have any machine lying around. (I do have an RPi which is acting as my home server today. But it’s only 2GB and that’s why I am trying to replace it.) So, my options are to buy old desktop, old enterprise server or build a new

Thanks for the detailed writeup, much appreciated! Another thing I'd like your opinion on is this: my use cases involve running a few services at home (NAS, Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Photoprism etc.) and store "family" data (docum

I was a NextDNS user until recently. I now use the following setup: - Pi-hole on a Raspberry Pi at home. It uses Cloudflare as its upstream DNS resolver and provides ad blocking for all devices connected to my home network. - RPi also runs

They don’t ask you for credit card details for their Free Tier version. I know because I’ve had that for over a year now. In fact, their free tier is designed such that you only use free services. If you want to use their paid tier, you nee

Syncthing is more of a synchronization tool and less of a backup tool. For e.g., if I screwed up a file on one machine, that will automatically be replicated to other machines. Dropbox, on the other hand, "can" be used as a backup

Seconding the recommendation. One of the best things about AnonAddy is that it allows you to create aliases on the fly. So, I hardly even need to visit their website, browser extension or anything.
