Proving things without comprehending them is a threat to intellectual work.
- thih9 1mo agoBased on recent history, we’re likely going to ignore this threat, continue doing this and perhaps call it vibe mathing.
- alain94040 1mo agoWhy is it a threat and not an opportunity? Imagine if in ancient times there was their Oracle that could produce mathematical proofs of any question you asked it, would you burn it or try to understand how it works and use it to ask questions you are stuck on?
- vouaobrasil 1mo agoI would burn it because it's too much power for any one person to handle. Or, I would take it for myself by force and use it to dominate everyone else.
- aeve890 1mo ago>without comprehending Very on brand with using AI for everything.
- Stevvo 1mo agoNo, it is not. Proving things without comprehending them built much of human civilization. Comprehension is a relatively new fad that came along in the 17th century with the scientific method.
- andsoitis 1mo ago> Comprehension is a relatively new fad that came along in the 17th century with the scientific method. Humans have always tried to make sense (comprehend) the world around us. The methods have become more rigorous, but the idea of understanding less in order to advance civilization is a truly weird idea.

You want to check your legal position you do mate. Under law the Quest for Ultimate Truth is quite clearly the inalienable prerogative of your working thinkers. Any bloody machine goes and actually finds it and we're straight out of a job aren't we?
- 93po 1mo agoProving pharmaceutical drugs work on mental health issues has tremendous value even though we don't always (or often) understand the exact mechanisms in brain chemistry as to why it works
- augment_me 1mo agoNo-one cares anymore, OpenAI does not care about the prize either or whatever the Clay institute has to say for that matter. It's about attention, capital and compute. If you can use the result to increase shareholder or company value, that is what matters.
- danenania 1mo agoOutside of mathematics, I think it’s very rare for a single human to understand 100% of any complex undertaking, and this was true long before AI.
