none of this is about knowing their customer; I find is bizarre people think knowing a single boolean about 18 years of age provides anything they're not getting by finger printing your browser and sharing that fingerprint with an ad network.
This is about reducing liability and making everyone else responsible for their inability to manage their community.
- embedding-shape 1mo ago> I find is bizarre people think knowing a single boolean about 18 years of age provides anything You're hopelessly naive if you think this is all they get out of it.
- azan_ 1mo agoYou are naive if you think they can’t infer almost everything about median user already.
- duskdozer 1mo agoWhy would they need to do ID checks then?
- azan_ 1mo agoLiability
- embedding-shape 1mo agoThey certainly can't infer my full name and address from what I've used Claude for in the past, but if I'm forced to hand over my ID and I do, then they would.
- password54321 1mo agoHaven't they reported "anonymous" users before to the police?
- fn-mote 1mo agoCan you source this? Seems believable but I haven’t heard it before.
- embedding-shape 1mo agoI don't know, how is that relevant to them asking for IDs now and also still not yet knowing my full name and/or address?
- cobolcomesback 1mo agoThey infer your full name and address from the trackers baked into your OS, browser, phone, and every website you visit. They already have this. They’ve had it for years. They don’t need your ID for it.
- embedding-shape 1mo agoYeah, surely assuming how some random HN user browses the internet never been wrong.
- pocksuppet 29d agoThe trackers have this if you upload your ID to some websites.

- cyanydeez 1mo agoyou think knowing whether a user is 18 or older is more valuable than browser/cli/network finger prints? Truly naive is the mirror you're looking into. We agree these are useless contrivances, but positing constantly that "this is just some great surveillance game" as opposed to the offloading of government responsibilities to private industry in the hope of removing all social regulatory liabilities? Naive is how you spell that.
- cobolcomesback 1mo agoIt’s wild how many people think that these tech companies are capable of some major conspiracy where they’re gathering and tracking user data for some unknown-but-nefarious purposes… while simultaneously also ignoring or even rejecting the reality that this has already been happening, for years. It’s like people claiming that Alexa is listening to their conversations to spy on them… when the reality is much worse. Every website you visit and app you download is spying on every single action you take, and they’ve gotten so good at it that they don’t need to listen to your conversations. They already know stuff about you without you even saying it out loud.

- embedding-shape 1mo ago> you think knowing whether a user is 18 or older is more valuable than browser/cli/network finger prints? Why have this sort of argument/"come back" become so popular on HN? Where you learned to reply/debate, reddit? Did I ever make such a claim anywhere in this submission? Maybe try actually responding to something I've said rather than just creating your own imaginary arguments no one said.
- asadotzler 1mo agoIt's been a slow decline for about 15 years. It's as if the median age went from about 23 to about 15.
