US diesel prices hit a record high of $5.85 on average
- robin_reala 1mo ago$5.85 a US gallon? Horrendous, you’re up to 70% of what diesel costs in Sweden today.[1] [1] https://bensinpriskollen.se/dieselpris/ https://bensinpriskollen.se/dieselpris/
- stockresearcher 1mo agoA large component of the price of fuel is taxes, which are then used for roadway construction and maintenance. Here in the US (and probably Sweden too), those taxes are not sufficient to pay all of the roadway costs, so tax money from general funds - income taxes, sales/use/vat(?), etc - get diverted to help cover costs. In reality, the overall cost of fuel is probably very similar. It’s just that the overall cost is more directly reflected in the price shown at the fuel station in Sweden than in the US.

- 7bit 1mo agoSo what? People in the US should not feel pressured by it, because you have it worse?

- 7bit 1mo agoBro what the heck are you talking about. Maybe Google vassals and you'd be ashamed talking such ignorant nonsense. But you won't. It's actually on me feeding the troll.
- lyu07282 1mo agoAhh right sorry I meant "bringing democracy to Iran has a price every western aligned state should be willing to pay" or something like that
- brnt 1mo agoI guess you don't want us to complain we are also feeling the effects? We couldn't and didn't vote the primary cause for this in office, thank you very much.
- 7bit 1mo agoNo -- and that wasnt a complaint. It was downright an attack. It always makes me laugh when people can't follow an argument or chain of thought -- or misconstrue because they need to win random Internet arguments
- retired 1mo ago€2.66 for diesel in The Netherlands. Which is double of the US price. Good thing the majority of The Netherlands does everything on a bicycle and doesn't need a car. It does hurt the transportation industry though. And agriculture, construction, heavy industries.
- brnt 1mo agoThere is plenty of car traffic in NL [1]. Most runs on benzine/gasoline though, not diesel. - 1over137 1mo ago5.85 USD/gallon is: 1.33€ / L or 2.10 CAD / L.
- xattt 1mo agoCries in actual 2.60/L CAD. I am feeling it for folks who use oil heat (diesel with different tax structure) in areas where there is no natural gas. Home heating oil runs at about 75% the cost of diesel. The storage tanks are 275 gallons/1100 litres, so a fill-up, which might happen four to six times in a winter, would be extremely painful right now.
- throwaway270925 1mo agoLets hope this motivates a lot of them to invest in stuff like ground source heat pumps (where applicable/affordable)

- dzonga 1mo agomost goods in the US today are transported via trucks. most of the whole main-street runs on diesel as well think home services businesses etc. cost of diesel has a reverb effect across the whole economy. the shrinkage is felt but won't be truly reflected in the economy. so the government can keep lying about the numbers.
- altcognito 1mo agothey can lie all they want, gas is maybe the most politically sensitive number since it does have the "whole economy" effect and the effects are seen reasonably quick
- thelastgallon 1mo agoDiesel should cost a lot more, almost all of the road damage is by heavy trucks. Trucking is being subsidized by all of us.
- sokoloff 1mo agoAnd the advantages are being enjoyed by all of us, at least in the US. If you’re the kind of person who eats food, uses toilet paper and paper towels, and lives inside a building made of lumber, insulation, HVAC, pipes, and electrical components, those all got to your point of use on a truck.
- bryanlarsen 1mo agoThe US has a really good freight train network. Yet there's a good chance the products you discussed didn't use the much more efficient train for the long distance portion of their transit.
- deleted 1mo ago[deleted]
- gryfft 1mo agoIf it's more efficient, is that not an arbitrage opportunity?
- bryanlarsen 1mo ago- it's less convenient. If the cost difference is small because trucking is cheap people will pay more for convenience. - the cost difference is smaller than it should be. Trucking is highly subsidized, since diesel taxes don't come anywhere close to paying for the roads. OTOH railroads have to maintain their own infrastructure.
- andrew_lettuce 1mo ago... Usually on the best land they were gifted for building the railway line on the first place, so heavily subsidized as well
- gniv 1mo agoIt's interesting that diesel is taxed more than gas in the US. It's the other way around in France.
- retired 1mo agoIt’s largely historical. France heavily encouraged diesel cars for decades, so there’s now a huge installed base. Once you’ve done that, you can’t suddenly jack up diesel taxes without making a lot of people very angry (and probably setting a few cars on fire).
- ButlerianJihad 1mo agoWe noticed. In the 1980s, it was not uncommon to smell/hear a diesel sedan putting around town. It was invariably something like a Peugeot or a Volkswagen.
- gniv 1mo agoYes they tried to increase it a few years ago and failed. Farmers came with tractors to Paris..
- deleted 1mo ago[deleted]
- altcognito 1mo agoThe diesel/gas relationship is inverted between the countries, so it actually makes a lot of sense (though not perfectly as both countries use diesel for freight)
- Brendinooo 1mo agoAh yes, right around the time when I buy my heating oil for the winter...

- zenethian 1mo agoWhere are the “I did that” stickers now???
- JKCalhoun 1mo agoOh, I see them, ha ha!
- esalman 1mo agoI see them in many gas stations in SoCal. Irony is unlike this administration, the previous one didn't have much to do with fuel demand spike in first summer after COVID lockdowns.
- lenkite 1mo agoAccording to Trumper forums, this is just a short spike that will be solved within a month by Trump's publicized Venezuelan Oil Conquest - black gold soon to be in the hand of US Corpo (North American Blue Energy Partners). Prices will drop very, very soon to $2/gallon. Trump has this well in hand and you must keep the faith with GEOTUS.
