Apple pulls its ads from X after Musk's antisemitic posts
- xyzelement 3y ago[flagged]
- chrisjc 3y agoSorry, but I still can't really figure out what's going on. So he didn't say something antisemitic? Was that just one of many other statements which were antisemitic? It's all open to interpretation?
- serf 3y agoThis kind of confusion is why I hate and advocate against Twitter as the worlds' choice for a soap-box. It turns out that simplifying the entire world's discourse into likes and re-tweets and snippets of media creates confusion and misdirection.
- medler 3y agoThis is the Twitter thread: @CWBOCA: To the cowards hiding behind the anonymity of the internet and posting "Hitler was right": You got something you want to say? Why dont you say it to our faces… ————————— @breakingbaht: Okay. Jewish communties have been pushing the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them. I'm deeply disinterested in giving the tiniest shit now about western Jewish populations coming to the disturbing realization that those hordes of minorities that support flooding their country don't exactly like them too much. You want truth said to your face, there it is. —————————————— @elonmusk: You have said the actual truth <end quote> The statement Elon calls the “actual truth” is one of the most unambiguously antisemitic statements I’ve ever heard. It’s also what the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter said in his manifesto.
- zardo 3y agoYou agree with him that "Jewish communities push hatred against whites"?
- bdangubic 3y agonon-Jews on any color, not just Whites
- xyzelement 3y agoI hate that phrasing including because it sounds intentional. I do think that support of “progressives” often ends up that way even when people support it for innocent reasons.
- mindslight 3y agoIt's exactly this imagined/forced intentionality that is the problem. One can make a thoughtful point of how some Jews support causes that end up being anti-Semitic. It's probably best to focus on the actual causes and the actual people in question so the nuance doesn't get lost (and also so we can avoid things like support for Palestinian civilians being painted with the "anti-Semitic" brush). In fact, your restatement of how you interpreted the comment Musk responded to got most of the way there. But the actual quote Musk expressed agreement with was quite far from any such thing: "Jewish communties have been pushing the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them. I'm deeply disinterested in giving the tiniest shit now about western Jewish populations coming to the disturbing realization that those hordes of minorities that support flooding their country don't exactly like them too much." (https://nitter.net/elonmusk/status/1724908287471272299 https://nitter.net/elonmusk/status/1724908287471272299) Driving attention towards focusing on racial groups as if they have overarching explanatory power is exactly what makes this racist conspiracy tripe.
- appplication 3y agoYeah the actual quote is pretty bad. It touches all the bases: - broad generalizations about ethnic groups - implication that the Jewish community is somehow collectively conspiring to push some narrative - “no, you’re racist” - making it a point to be unapologetic about directed hatred towards jews - make sure it’s clear that bad things happening to Jews isn’t itself a bad thing, it’s them getting what they deserve - implying Jews and whites are mutually exclusive groups - somehow sliding a “fuck immigrants” sentiment in there at the end People got all uppity about Kanye, but even he wasn’t on this level.
- brap 3y agoIt's also funny when you put this in the context of the whole Israel situation, as if most Israeli Jews are somehow "woke"? Come on dude, that shit doesn't fly in Israel.

- abcdefg12 3y agoWhy is Google still paying Musk money ?
- isodev 3y agoBecause controversy increases engagement and ad revenue. Discussing “the latest outrageous thing X did” is good for G business.
- huytersd 3y agoHow could he go from being a role model and demigod to so many to such a piece of shit so quickly?
- olliej 3y agoHe's been known to be a piece of shit for years - recall that he did not found Tesla, he just out lawyered the actual founders and kicked them out of the company. He was already known to have abandoned his kids. All of his companies have had problems with sexism and racism. The difference is now a large enough number of people are willing to publicly support this trash that he gets people telling him he's awesome for doing so, so he's happy to keep doing so on increasingly public platforms. He's essentially what happens if a reddit edgelord was a billionaire.
- BillyTheMage 3y agoThere's always been a healthy amount of people who knew he was evil and criticized him as such, especially in anti-capitalism circles. From the other side of the fence it seems like him being seen as a piece of shit has been steadily growing for years, and this one incident just happened to provide a nice boost. He's always been abusive, exploitative, and manipulative. His entire success is one long story of taking credit for other people's work, and just generally being an "I'm in charge" kind of POS.
- add-sub-mul-div 3y agoWe're so close to collectively learning the lesson that being a piece of shit on the way up shouldn't be ignored until they're on the way down, and there's a connection between that and being deserving of role model status.
- morkalork 3y agoI think by now we would've learned to wait till after someone has died and some time has passed to let any skeletons in closets come out before idolizing them. And yet, even today, statues and buildings are named after the living..
- mikestew 3y agoAxios cites unnamed sources in a report that Apple is pausing advertising on X. "Pausing". Until the next billionaire's club meeting, Tim and Elon kiss and make up, and it's back to business as usual like last time? I hesitate to type out the cynical hot take, but at what point does a company just say, "ya know, you're just not worth the headache"? How many times does the company representative have to say, "we're losing advertising dollars, and it's all the fault of The Jews!" before you just cut ties, and don't want to be associated with that noise? Those are somewhat honest questions, because I'll allow a little "well, with a multi-billion multi-national corporation it's just not that easy". I really would like to know why it's obvious to me to "as of today, we are pulling our advertising with $COMPANY, and we won't be coming back any time soon", but not obvious to (for example) Tim Cook.
- generj 3y agoI agree with you, but Apple benefits from inserting as much ambiguity as possible. For example they previously unpaused X ads, but their ad spend has to be much smaller than previously. After yet again applying the pause stick, later as a carrot to X they can publicly “unpause” again but privately buy only $10K of monthly ads. They don’t get the opprobrium of looking like they have an animus against Musk with consumers who buy iDevices and also like Musk’s culture war issues.

- generj 3y agoIf Apple doesn’t have a client relationship with “X” it is probably easier for them to publicly justify enforcing App Store policies.

- dang 3y agoCould you please stop posting unsubstantive comments and flamebait? You've unfortunately been doing it repeatedly. It's not what this site is for, and destroys what it is for. If you wouldn't mind reviewing https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and taking the intended spirit of the site more to heart, we'd be grateful.
- eh_why_not 3y agoCan someone link to what he said exactly?
- recursivecaveat 3y agoHere's an archive of the thread in question: https://web.archive.org/web/20231117022239/https://nitter.net/elonmusk/status/1724908287471272299 https://web.archive.org/web/20231117022239/https://nitter.ne... I don't know how anyone can 'report' on a tweet without quoting said tweet with a straight face.
- eviks 3y agoIndeed a common journalistic malpractice
- leetgirl83 3y agoVirtually every news outlet was lying about what Elon said. Almost like it was all coordinated. Here is a pretty good video on all the media lies https://youtu.be/u9l_2E4LPgY?si=_RjZjWTDsG8jb5Ol https://youtu.be/u9l_2E4LPgY?si=_RjZjWTDsG8jb5Ol
