HP Dev One Laptop with Pop_OS
- jchw 4y agoThe pointer stick is a really great thing to have assuming it works well. That said, my muscle memory would be decimated by the lack of a middle button. On Thinkpads, holding this makes the pointer stick scroll, making it a lot more useful than if it only middle clicked.
- aidenn0 4y agoThe pointer stick on my HP isn't as good as the one on a thinkpad, but it's "okay." Of course my HP has a middle-button so the lack of that here is mind boggling to me.
- scrlk 4y agoDo you have a ZBook? Those have always had the middle mouse button (probably for people who use CAD etc). EliteBook trackpoints never had a middle button.
- HenryMulligan 4y ago"EliteBook trackpoints never had a middle button." That is not correct. My old HP EliteBook 8560W had not one but two sets of three mouse buttons. See the first image at this article: https://notebooks.com/2011/04/12/hp-elitebook-8560w-details-specs-and-pricing-video/ https://notebooks.com/2011/04/12/hp-elitebook-8560w-details-...
- scrlk 4y agoI should have been clearer. HP's mainstream business laptops never had the middle mouse button whilst their workstation laptops (such as your 8560W) have always had them.
- HenryMulligan 4y agoOkay, fair. Thank you for clarifying.
- aidenn0 4y agoYes, 15" zbook
- JamesAdir 4y agoI hope that someone at Lenovo sees this. It's time to step up their game. Bring us an X220 with swappable batteries, option to replace and upgrade parts and the awesome keyboard.
- smoldesu 4y agoParts of this look neat... why do they refer to the memory as a fixed factor, though? Is this really a single-SKU product without configuration options?
- aarongray 4y agoIt has a trackpoint mouse like the Thinkpads <3
- jeffbee 4y agoAll HP EliteBooks have one, right?
- qu4z-2 4y agoMy work one certainly does, and I've found that replacing the cap with an official ThinkPad one gets you about 50% of the way to "ThinkPad-quality TrackPoint". But it started out as "Is this purely decorative? Have you tried to use this?!" so even with the red cover it was "Well, I guess it works for minimal mousing inbetween typing." These days I use an external ThinkPad keyboard on it, since I'm mostly docked at a desk anyway.
- spyremeown 4y agoThe had to off-center the trackpad to match the trackpoint in order to fit those keys by the left. I'm a very big fan of page up and down keys, but I absolutely hate off-center trackpads. What do you guys think?
- fortysixdegrees 4y agoCursor arrow key layout fail. Devs use cursor keys more than anyone and they didn't prioritise a layout you can easily hit with muscle memory. I know because my current laptop has a layout like this machine and it sucks
- smoldesu 4y agoInverted-T is a good layout for the most part, but I think IBM/Lenovo have suckered me into their 3x2 arrow cluster. Having pgup and pgdown so close to a single hand really helps me fly through docs and PDFs.

- messe 4y ago16GB RAM? Is it upgradable or can it be configured higher? If not, why in god's name would you have 16GB RAM as a selling point? FHD at 14"? That's more than usable sure, but I'd prefer at least 2560x1440, preferably 2560x1600; A 16:9 aspect ratio is a pain in the ass. 4 years ago, these specs (if you can even call it that, we've been given almost no information) would have been decent. Now? This just seems desperate. EDIT: I know this is quite critical. I like that there is a laptop out there from a traditional OEM, that is being supplied with Pop! OS. I just wish it was a better laptop, because the person looking for a laptop with Pop! OS is more than likely going to be looking for one with decent specs and may have enough additional income to spend on those specs. Other than the 1TB drive (I'm happy with 256GB in a lot of cases thanks to my NAS and streaming), this feels like the bare minimum specs for a laptop in 2022.
- Rebelgecko 4y agoI haven't used Pop!_OS so maybe this isn't a valid concern, but some Linux distros have a hard time with DPI scaling, especially by non-integer amounts... So you could end up with an unfortunate situation where a 1440p screen is too small to read at 1x scaling but too clunky to use at 2x
- messe 4y agoI believe Pop!_OS is based on GNOME, which handles fractional scaling in the same way as macOS, by rendering the UI at 2x and then scaling down. In my experience with macOS, this is good enough for ~95% of cases (I've run into issues with image editing and pixel art). It hurts battery life, but... this is a developer laptop: make it a bit thicker, and give it as much battery as you legally can. EDIT: If you're going to down this, please share your disagreement in the comments below; fractional scaling has some good arguments on either side, I'd be interested to hear another perspective.
- freeAgent 4y agoNot downvoting, but it’s problematic on Linux when you hook up a second display at different scaling/resolution. Whenever I’m in Linux in my home office, I regret having 4K monitors that require scaling to be readable.
- yakkityyak 4y agoTo be brutally honest, this looks like a very lame laptop.
- emmelaich 4y agoFor $1000 it looks ok to me!
- p1necone 4y agoI guess it's not surprising that a forum full of tech professionals would ignore price when judging things, but the fact that it's fairly cheap absolutely is important for a tonne of people. Not everyone needs enough ram to simultaneously run a bunch of VMs and train a neural network and edit 4k video all at the same time lol. (Although 16gb is almost a non starter for Unreal Engine development, and that does run on Linux albeit with some prerequisite yak shaving)
- mmstick76 4y agoYou can upgrade it to 64 GB
- MBCook 4y agoFor the most part I agree. It seems to be quite nice, assuming the screen is decent (my older HP that my work gave me gas a terrible screen). Having 16 GB and 1 TB SSD for about $1000 is pretty good. I’m not a fan of the arrow keys, Apple made that same mistake. Given the other specs I’m sure this isn’t possible without raising the price, but I just can’t believe people are still buying brand new laptops in 2022 that have 1080p screens. I mean if it’s a $400 budget model ok I guess. I suppose I’m more surprised people find that acceptable than that vendors sell it. Do people not know something much better is available? Ignoring those two complaints/preferences this seems like a pretty decent PC laptop.
- metadat 4y agoDownvoted only because you didn't elaborate or qualify your criticism, which makes for very lame reading and adds nothing of value to the thread. I'm trying to be nice by giving you some honest feedback, assuming you don't realize that it sucks for people to read vapid criticisms without substance. Edit: Yes, thank you, please downvote me without saying why. Thank you! How deep does the rabbit hole go? It stings and bleeds.. lol :)
- stakkur 4y agoThis seems...underwhelming. In most features, especially the screen. Also: I've used multiple high-end HP laptops at work (a requirement), and they are awful.
- newaccount2021 4y ago
- prescriptivist 4y agoLooking at the keyboard layout makes me wonder. How many devs here actually use the right shift key and/or the right modifier keys? I've been programming for 20 years (15 or so using emacs) and I exclusively use the left shift and left modifiers. I probably have never used the (physically) right shift/modifier keys on the keyboard I'm currently typing on that I've had for 2 years. I loathe the four left modifier key layout on keyboards which is probably why I hate typing on my Macbook. It would be nice if I could have a fat left control key with the fn key on the right somewhere.
- messe 4y agoI use right shift all the time? Probably 50:50 between the two for me.
- samtheprogram 4y agoMy brother says the same thing, I thought it was absurd when I first heard it but they are out there.
- keybored 4y agoToday I learned that touch typing is absurd.
- wolverine876 4y ago> How many devs here actually use the right shift key and/or the right modifier keys? I probably have never used the (physically) right shift/modifier keys on the keyboard I'm currently typing on that I've had for 2 years. Why would that be common? I ask because I also don't use the right modifier keys, but that's because I got in the habit years ago on a keyboard which forced me to do it that way.

- itomato 4y agoOffset trackpad is a 100% deal breaker for me, sorry. It could support 64GB and Libreboot and I would pass.
- wolverine876 4y agoIt's centered under the spacebar in the image I see (which is elsewhere).
- cstrahan 4y agoI don’t get why, but it’s not uncommon for people to prefer the aesthetic of the trackpad being centered on the chassis, while being offset relative to the midpoint between the two home rows of the keyboard. Palm rejection nowadays is pretty decent, but still, I’d much rather not have my right palm constantly in contact with the trackpad.
- itomato 4y agoYour hands are offset relative to the screen. My posture follows, and it’s a drag.
- wolverine876 4y agoHave you given it a try? I used to think that and avoided off-center keyboards, but I ended up with one and it wasn't a problem. YMMV.
- itomato 4y agoYep. It annoys me like driving a GM parts bin car with off-center controls
- makeitdouble 4y agoIt made me notice the vertical line of keys on the right, which is why the spacebar isn’t centered. I don’t think any of these keys are useful enough to warrant taking that space and shifting the whole keyboards to the left. Feels really like a checklist driven design.
- tristor 4y agoI want to like this, but I feel like 32GB of RAM is minimum if I were buying a new laptop. I’ve been heavily eyeing the Framework but I’d prefer AMD. This had AMD but is limited to 16GB of RAM… lots of unnecessary tradeoffs being made here.
- Kaibeezy 4y agoI’m non-tech side and snorted at max 16GB for devs. GLWT HP. Concur with the other comment that said it’s a marketing exercise aimed at decision makers.
- systemvoltage 4y agoI don't get it, you can upgrade it. What's the problem? 16GB is not the maximum possible RAM. Edit: I meant, you can upgrade it when speccing the laptop. The RAM is probably soldered.
- crossroadsguy 4y agoProblem is it’s not a metal encased laptop with a partially bitten fruit on the back. If it had been that then people would have been happy to pay $2K for 8GB RAM and sing paeans and wait breathlessly to upgrade to next iteration for $2.9K next year, again with 8GB RAM.
- filmgirlcw 4y agoI mean, is it clear that it is upgradable? Because I don’t see any information about that on HP’s site. And it isn’t ridiculous to ask this question as most $1100 laptops don’t have upgradable memory. So if you’re stuck at 16GB, that’s unacceptable for a developer laptop in 2022, I don’t care what logo is on the back. 32GB is the only acceptable starting point.
- mmstick76 4y agoYou can add memory modules for 32 or 64 GB
- easton 4y agoIs this a custom laptop or a different SKU of an existing one? I haven’t seen a recent EliteBook so I can’t identify it on sight anymore, unfortunately.
- pram 4y agoIt’s a Pavilion afaict.
- deleted 4y ago[deleted]
- qzw 4y agoEdit: Actually it looks more like an Elitebook 845. Here's one with similar specs (smaller 512GB SSD) for $1569. https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-elitebook-845-g8-notebook-pc-p-61d33ua-aba-1 https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-elitebook-845-g8-notebo... Original: Yes, it looks quite a bit like this one: https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-pavilion-laptop-14-ec1097nr https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/pdp/hp-pavilion-laptop-14-ec10... Similar specs but with a non-Pro Ryzen 7 CPU and smaller 256GB SSD for $649. Keeping in mind that there's no special sale going on, so this is just the baseline price.
- midislack 4y agoBy definition an SKU is unique, it’s a product ID code. The exact same laptop would have two different SKUs if it came in two colors but was otherwise identical.
- rychco 4y agoI’m a big fan of pop_os & have been using it for years, but being limited to 16gb of memory is probably a dealbreaker
- mmstick76 4y agoIt is upgradeable to 64 GB.
- tedunangst 4y agoWhat is with those arrow keys? Who wants double wide half height up and down keys? 2 x 0.5 does not equal one full sized key. Am I really to believe that relabeling the win key to super is some sort of engineering feat?
- proactivesvcs 4y agoAnd the power button sitting just above backspace. Point me to a dev who doesn't use backspace about as much as they do the return key ;-)
- GekkePrutser 4y agoYeah it's very hopeful there is a delay built in when pressing that, like Apple does.
- diffeomorphism 4y agoWhy "built in"? Isn't that just software? E.g. on every Linux laptop I had there was a drop-down menu for "when power button is pressed, do...".
- GekkePrutser 4y agoWell, it triggers an ACPI event, that is pretty close to hardware. And it's handy to not ignore the power button. What Apple does is just waiting to trigger the ACPI event unless you press it for half a second or so.
- drKarl 4y agoWell actually... I use vim keybindings everywhere including IntelliJ, and I don't use the backspace to delete as it's inefficient... I sometimes use the return key, but not that often either since I have more efficient ways to open a new line as well. I'm sure there's lots of devs like me... That said, the location of the power button is unfortunate, I would expect it to be on the corner.

- muti 4y agoAs a sibling comment mentioned, no middle button though, which makes it less useful
- DaiPlusPlus 4y agoThe keyboard is missing an Insert key. But they're advertising an "FHD" screen as though that's a selling feature? That's only 1920x1080 - my Sony Vaio Z laptop from 2010 has the same resolution. People doing any kind of user-facing frontend dev-work pretty-much need a screen capable of 2x/200%/192dpi (i.e. 4K) at least. ...that's a deal-killer for me, as is the lack of a true middle-button on the touchpad. I'll be sticking with my ThinkPad X1.
- suprjami 4y agoInsert is on F10. Maybe the Function keys are hidden behind Fn, pretty common on laptops and compact discrete keyboards these days. Keep in mind your X1 was at least twice the price of this thing (honestly I feel they are overpriced, Asus do literally the same thing for $1k less)
- pooper 4y ago> Keep in mind your X1 was at least twice the price of this thing (honestly I feel they are overpriced, Asus do literally the same thing for $1k less) You cannot look at Lenovo sticker price. My conspiracy theory is it exists for the same reason Azure sticker price does: to give procurement managers something to do. My understanding is almost nobody pays sticker on either.
- 4y ago
- pzlarsson 4y agoIt has a trackpoint with 2 buttons which tells us they did not put any serious effort into this input device. Would you use a 2 button mouse without scroll-wheel or a touchpad without 2-fingers scrolling? I suspect this low effort goes for the whole product which is a budget laptop with marketing directed at decision makers instead of users.
- emmelaich 4y agoThe presence of the buttons doesn't matter much does it? Assuming a tap works as mouse click. Maybe they're there for nipple users - it has one. Use fingers on the nipple and thumb on the button. So to speak.
- hedora 4y agoThe third button is usually for scrolling.
- Beltalowda 4y agoOr opening links in new tab, and paste if you use X11/Wayland.
- numpad0 4y agoAnd for closing tabs/opening links in background. Both are required.
- ccouzens 4y agoMaybe pressing both together registers as a the third button?
- neilv 4y agoGood catch. The Trackpoint in the photo had piqued my interest. But Trackpoint has come with 3 buttons for about 20 years, and I'm pretty sure the middle button gets used heavily by many people.
- suprjami 4y ago
- albertzeyer 4y ago> Run multiple apps in parallel It sounds funny that this is part of the advertisement.
- jasoneckert 4y agoI'm not going to critique this laptop as others have done here. Just over $1K for a laptop with an 8 core Ryzen, 16GB DDR4 and a 1TB SSD isn't outrageous. The main takeaways I get from this are that HP is now getting on the Linux developer bandwagon, and that they chose Pop!_OS as their distro due to the success and reputation of System76. And I think these are both good things, and a sign that we'll see more of the same with laptop hardware vendors.
- hardwaresofton 4y agoDefinitely. Imagine a world where perennially late to the market HP is chasing the trend of Linux on the laptop. We now live in that world. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31391880 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31391880
- Shared404 4y agoTurns out the fabled year was 202X all along. I'll admit, I'm delighted to see HP announce this, if only because it means System76 will (probably) get more funding for Pop_OS and that this may "legitimize" the Linux Desktop more with three major manufacturers carrying supported options.
- hardwaresofton 4y agoLate but absolutely agreed. I fun an Oryx Pro and while I don’t use PopOS, all their hard work is on display constantly — their improvements there bleed over to other distros so easily (they’ve struck a great balance between releasing compatible stuff but staying sane and not exponentially increasing their support burden)
- oneplane 4y agoThe weird thing is that HP undermines their effort a bit by they doing the consumer bloatware thing where they 'load it up with stuff for you to do your job' according to their marketing material.
- de6u99er 4y agoI'd love to see how it holds up against Dell's new XPS 13 Linux offering and those System76 laptops.
- yjftsjthsd-h 4y agoThat's interesting; I thought System76 made Pop!_OS specifically to have a distro tuned to their hardware, but assuming this is as official as it looks that implies that they've started going for licensing it out to other vendors
- 2143 4y agoLike nearly all other distros, you could install Pop!_OS on any machine. I've used it for a couple of years in a Dell Vostro laptop (which was factory-loaded with Ubuntu). Works totally fine.
- yjftsjthsd-h 4y agoSure, but there's a difference between "this is available for users to install" and "this is available out of the box from a commercial vendor, who is advertising this as part of the product and is using System76 trademarks in their product page".
- wging 4y agoIt's open-source and mostly or entirely licensed under the GPLv3, so I don't think HP would've needed to license it.
- yjftsjthsd-h 4y agoThey stuck the Pop!_OS logo right up by the HP logo at the top of the page; I would be astonished if they didn't have some sort of legal agreement to use the trademark.
- p1necone 4y agoIs it common to have a proprietary/trademarked logo for an otherwise entirely open source project? That seems a little silly to me but I'm not really aware of what is standard.
- 4y ago
- colordrops 4y ago> Run multiple apps in parallel woah
- julianlam 4y agoThe initial copy probably said "run two electron apps at the same time", and a marketing review decided that was too esoteric and shit-canned it.
- smm11 4y agoJust get an XPS 13 right now.
- mr337 4y agoSure if you don’t want proper sleep/hibernate. Dell won’t fix and I’m still salty about it after buying two of them.
- AndroidKitKat 4y agoOr if you do use sleep, make sure you don't put it in a bag since that will void the warranty [0] [0]: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28639952 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28639952
- Beltalowda 4y agoOr if you a €2000 laptop where the battery will stop working after a year and a half, only to find out that Dell no longer sells them and DRM-locked the thing so you can't even get a third-party one.
- julianlam 4y agoWhat's wrong with sleep? My XPS 13 sleeps just fine (deep sleep too, none of that s2idle crap) https://devnull.land/laptop-s2idle-to-deep https://devnull.land/laptop-s2idle-to-deep
- zitterbewegung 4y agoRegardless of all of the specs I would say that the biggest thing I would be interested in would be the the screen aspect ratio. 3:2 vs 16:9 is really important.
- kn100 4y agoThe 16:9 screen is an immediate turn off for me. on a machine of this size that extra screen real estate you get with 16:10 or even 3:2 is important to me. Shame too, because this could be the perfect machine for me.
- jagger27 4y agoYeah it's a bit of a joke at this point, especially for a device marketed to developers. To me it screams cost cutting. If Lenovo and Dell can start to go back to taller displays then HP certainly can too.
- DaiPlusPlus 4y agoNot only is it 16:9, but it's only 1920x1080: no opportunity for 2x/4K which you need thesedays if you doing any kind of user-facing frontend work.
- p1necone 4y agoI've been spoiled by Framework/Macbooks/some Chromebooks and wouldn't ever consider a laptop with a 16:9 screen instead of something like 3:2. I also hope the RAM isn't soldered to the board. Other than those two nitpicks though this seems like a pretty solid offering. The fact they're only offering POP_OS! on a single laptop is probably both a blessing and a curse - it kinda sucks, but it also means hardware compatibility should be really solid.
- pengaru 4y ago> a tuned Linux keyboard with a Super key
- GekkePrutser 4y agoThat's really cool yeah, Dell never bothered to change out the Windows key on their Linux-based developer models. It's not a huge deal but it's a really nice touch.
- suprjami 4y agoYou should look up the i3 keybindings and use those. Mine are based off that: Super+Enter for terminal. Super+Space for launcher (rofi). Super+C to center window. Super+X to close window. Super+F for file manager. Super+E for editor. I have many others. I wouldn't use a keyboard without a Super key.
- notRobot 4y agoGlad to see the inclusion of the "menu" key. Most HP laptops from the past several years haven't included one, but as a keyboard-first user, I can't live without one! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menu_key https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menu_key
- lurker1984 4y agoshame about the non centered trackpad
- filmgirlcw 4y agoThis isn’t a laptop I would personally buy for many of the reasons others have put in this thread, but it’s incredible to see such a focused SKU from HP here. This will likely be a small volume product and it is almost certainly based on something else in the HP portfolio (advantage of being such a huge OEM), but it’s nice to see a developer marketed laptop in this way. And running a distro other than straight Ubuntu or Red Hat, even. To me, this indicates that the market research teams at HP have seen the success of Framework and the various Clevo/Sager/Tongfang machines from Tuxedo, System76, XMG, etc. to see this as a viable market worth testing. Obviously, Dell has been doing this for years with the XPS Developer Edition or whatever they call it now, but it is nice to see a product from one of the other big laptop makers.
- 2143 4y agoAgreed. It's a good thing that more OEMs are supporting Linux out of the box.
- jseliger 4y agoIt's surprising to me that OEMs don't try to make every machine they sell Linux-ready and compatible, at the very least: OEMs have tied themselves to Microsoft by neglecting Linux, and in the process been party to problems like https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28639952 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28639952. If OEMs thought ahead, they could have made these changes 10 or 15 years ago, and perhaps have broken through the cost of Microsoft licenses. Instead, they've chosen what seems to be the short-sighted path.
- lnxg33k1 4y agoI to be honest have started thinking that there is a mutual interest for OEMs and Microsoft to support each other, like how many new laptops are going to be sold thanks to the windows 11 requirements? Meanwhile you get a Linux distro on a laptop from 20 years ago and either lxde or xfce or whatever and it runs almost like new OEMs then save the cost of license but open a Pandora box of voiding absolescence
- 4y ago
- justsomehnguy 4y ago> Control your workspace. Increase your productivity. Never look back. And the power button right on the main keyboard. You know, the button you hit multiple times in a day, like delete or backspace. Get lost.
- Program_Install 4y agoI think this would make a nice secondary machine for those interested in an accessible Linux distro. Pop!_OS is intuitive and recognizable from a functionality standpoint for newbies and pros alike. I will keep my eye on it, and see where it goes. The price point seems to be at a good place.
- jazzythom 4y ago‘bet you wish you could afford a Mac’ edition. Why can’t HP come up with a unique style? I’ll just get a thinkpad for $150. Its mostly just used as a text editor. of course my primary is a mac m1
- Shared404 4y agos/bet\ you\ wish\ you\ could\ afford\ a\ Mac/We finally sell the OS you want/ I hate MacOS. Honestly, I understand the appeal, but can't stand using it. I would literally rather be forced to work in Windows. If I could buy an M1 with Linux support as great as it's Mac support is, I would in a heartbeat. As it is, I'll be delighted to have options between System76, Framework, Dell, Lenovo, HP.
- deleted 4y ago[deleted]
- cosmiccatnap 4y agoI am not a fan of HP, their quality control is horrible but it's a good sign that companies are moving in the right direction on Linux. It goes to show that they realize the market for it is there and that, for all my misgivings about the company, is a good thing for them and for us. I genuinely hope it's a great laptop and an exception to the rule.
- RosanaAnaDana 4y agoI wonder if this is a sign that HP is looking to purchase System76. If so, I wonder where that leaves Pop_OS?
- seltzered_ 4y agoDear HP, you've also made a great repairable Linux Tablet, the Elite X2 (G4 & G8) which was discontinued this year. Consider bringing it back with a 3k2k OLED display and a wired & bluetooth keyboard/Trackpad (like you had on the HP zbook x2 G4) and get a decent marketing team. The folks at https://reddit.com/r/ergomobilecomputers https://reddit.com/r/ergomobilecomputers will thank you.
- zmmmmm 4y ago16G is not much RAM for a developer laptop. Do they understand what developers do these days? ie: running entire prod infrastructure using kubernetes or docker-compose on their dev setup is increasingly common.
- indymike 4y agoIf you run docker under Linux, and I'd assume you would on this machine, you do not incur the VM cost, so you can run containers and pay little more than you would if you were just running everything without the isolation. Life usually works out. I'm posting this from my 16GB LG Gram Linux machine that is running six containers full of servers and databases while I'm posting and has 6.5GB of available memory.
- aulin 4y agoAlways amazed hearing how other people work... I want my laptop to be portable, have a nice screen, long lasting battery and run cool and silent. There are way better machines to run an "entire prod infrastructure" and you can easily reach them with ssh.
- beebeepka 4y agoNo kidding. I want my laptops light and slim. My personal laptop is a slick Lenovo with a Ryzen 5800H, 16:10 screen and only 16 GB ram. I prefer it much better than my work provided "mobile workstation" that is hot, heavy and loud piece of shit with tons of ram, useless Xeon and a quadro. I know there are people who need this shit but this setup is the norm that barely anyone around here needs
- mmstick76 4y agoIt is upgradeable to 64 GB.
- busymom0 4y agoCan someone explain to me what makes this a "developer" laptop?
- panda88888 4y agoThe super key.
- beebeepka 4y agoThe marketing
- hippich 4y agoIt is cool to see this trend. Now, if you want truly nice Linux laptop - get a refurbished Dell 9710 with 64gb of RAM, Nvidia card and 2tb nvme storage with 4k display. Will end up sightly more, but I expect it to last for awhile.
- indymike 4y agoThis is a great start, and I'm really happy to see HP offering a Linux offering. Spec wise, love seeing 1TB of storage. The 14" screen size is great, but I do hope they offer a QHD or 4k screen option.
- aendruk 4y agoTitle could use an edit; Pop!_OS is misspelled.
- tlb 4y agoYoung me would have been surprised to learn that in the 2020s, computers were designed for non-programmers except for a few specialized ones.
- midislack 4y agoAwwwww, chicklet keyboard PLUS the utterly insufferable arrow keys? Damn, so close.
- Seb-C 4y agoSame here, the keyboard is the most important tool I'm using as a developer. Prioritizing flatiness over the quality and comfort of it is a huge dealbreaker. I'd gladly put more money for more power if I need, but having a decent keyboard is my main requirement. Which is a shame because otherwise it seems quite good (except for the design which is yet another soulless copy of Apple). I guess that I'll just stick to Thinkpads until this crazy trend dies.
- Animats 4y agoIs it for real, or are they just advertising "pre-orders" to see if there's a market? A major company should not be taking "pre-orders". That's for Kickstarters. It's not like making this requires much development. It's basically a standard HP laptop with Linux pre-installed. And you get a special keytop to replace the "Windows" key.
- sepisoad 4y agoIt’s ugly
- brokenkebab2 4y agoCan't say anything particularly critical towards the offer, but, dammit, copywriting is so ridiculous here: "multi-task like a pro with ... pro", or "run multiple apps in parallel" - wow, what a novelty. Could they save some time, and efforts, and just enumerate specs? Targeting for devs you probably will do better with less empty words
- aquir 4y agoAwesome, I love my ZBook x360 it is a great laptop and I can see that this new Dev One laptop inherits many design elements from the ZBook line. Linux is the cherry on top!

Edit: after signing up for the updates I've found this comment in the bottom of the email: "The content of this email is intended only for U.S. residents". Does this suggest that HP will release this laptop only for the U.S. market?
- xenago 4y agoThis is great to see from a major OEM
- beebeepka 4y agoFunny they don't even tell what kind of Ryzen. I presume it's a 5800 or something but still. Good job, marketeers. Man, Ryzen 6000 laptops can't come soon enough.

- tambre 4y ago> AMD Ryzen™ 7 PRO processor I wish someone would make a laptop that had ECC RAM along with this. Last I looked there were only some ultra high end Xeon laptops with ECC. :(
- death_syn 4y agoIt has a pointing stick!! Heck yeah!
- weare138 4y agoWhy is the trackpad offset to the left?? I can't stand that.
- mmcnl 4y agoThis looks almost exactly like the ProBook 440/640/645 G8. It looks like an old design with new hardware, rebranded for developers. Curious to see what the build looks like.
- humpydumpy 4y agoThat website is so bad, it misses all the important stuff. Any laptop from the last few years is easily fast enough for almost all developers. You don't need to tell developers that they can run multiple applications in parallel with 16GB of RAM. All this text about Popos could have been shortened to "100% linux compatible, no windows tax included". What really matters for a dev laptop: - keyboard: standard layout, great feel (like thinkpads 15 years ago; the keyboards have been gotten worse and worse since then) - screen: resolution (personally I would like more than FHD), aspect ratio, viewing angles, reflectivity, color reproduction - noise: is the machine completely silent in idle? Is it whisper quiet under heavy load? Does the fan remain off during short (<30s) load spikes? - ports: How many USB? Ethernet? Thunderbolt for docking? Also much more interesting than CPU/RAM: - is the RAM user replacable? - is the SSD user replacable? Can a second SSD be added? - battery runtime?
- chafporte 4y agoI want to see the power plug/socket. Any magnet ?
- Terretta 4y ago> See code clearly on a 14" diagonal FHD anti-glare display Sure.
- ChrisArchitect 4y agoInteresting play. Guess they're like why not court some linux devs....and/or people at "Pop!_OS" were pressuring them for a collab? Not my realm of activity really but never heard of Pop! until now
