- xhkkffbf 7y agoGoogle Cloud, Azure and AWS all support internet companies like Netflix or Amazon. Is it any mystery that they compete against F2F companies like malls, theaters, and stadia? Is it a surprise that they're being so cautious? They have little to lose and lots to gain. I feel sorry for the service workers who are being squeezed so hard by this disease.
- jpxw 7y agoThis post is dripping in PR-speak. “Retransforming” the event? Can we not just have plain English for once?
- hcnews 7y agoPlease log a thoughtful suggestion with our nearest customer service representative at your convenience. Hope you have a great rest of the day!

- bpodgursky 7y ago"We do not want your blood & mucous on our hands (either literally or figuratively)" "But thousands of people have committed time & energy to this event, and we want to salvage it" "It's now a webcast. Thanks and see you soon." -- Not a Google rep
- SpicyLemonZest 7y agoThe target audience of big enterprise conferences like this very much expects and appreciates PR-speak.
- gowld 7y agoThey appreciate it, really?
- SpicyLemonZest 7y agoReally. It communicates a sense of stability; you've got responsible people in charge, you're careful about what you say and how you say it, and even in the face of disaster you can remain calm and put the best face possible on things.

- Reedx 7y agoI'm surprised SXSW hasn't cancelled yet. That's a huge gathering starting in less than 2 weeks.
- dman 7y agoWould be reckless to still go ahead with it.
- pkulak 7y agoBunch of companies pulled out today.
- orliesaurus 7y agoIt would crush the Austin economy, there are businesses in the downtown which rent out their "space" for the 2/3 weeks of SXSW and make more money in this period of time, than they would otherwise do all year long! "The annual festival increased its economic impact to the City of Austin to $355.9 million in 2019, according to an analysis by Greyhill Advisors and South by Southwest." - xhkkffbf 7y agoYes! It's not a surprise that the cloud companies like Google or Amazon or Salesforce want to cancel events. They don't lose much -- and might even gain by encouraging more digital interaction. It's the waiters, hotel workers, cab drivers etc. who are really going to be squeezed. It's going to be rough for them.
- geerlingguy 7y agoEven if it’s not cancelled, there’s no way it’s as big as normal. Major sponsors already dropping out, some speakers the same... it would probably end up being a pretty tame event though. Might even be more fun for introverts!
- dfabulich 7y agoAs of today around 3pm Pacific, they've announced they're still going forward with it: https://www.sxsw.com/covid-19-attendee-information/ https://www.sxsw.com/covid-19-attendee-information/ > Regarding the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak: SXSW is working closely on a daily basis with local, state, and federal agencies to plan for a safe event. As a result of this dialogue and the recommendations of Austin Public Health, we are proceeding with the 2020 event with the health and safety of our attendees, staff, and volunteers as our top priority.

- 9nGQluzmnq3M 7y agoNot cancelled, but "reimagined" into an all-digital event. @dang, please update description and link to point here: https://cloud.google.com/blog/topics/google-cloud-next/join-us-for-google-cloud-next20-digital-connect https://cloud.google.com/blog/topics/google-cloud-next/join-...
- Johnny555 7y agoIt's still effectively cancelled. An online-only streaming event is not the same thing as a 30,000 attendee in-person event. (where the networking is more important than the presentations that are live-streamed anyway)
- nimbius 7y agoreading that dreck has me re-ingesting a burrito I had for lunch today.
- deleted 7y ago[deleted]
- bruth 7y agoYes it is a "spin" and yes technically the "in person" component is canceled (but who knows how they will emulate the hallway tracks)... but frankly this is a responsible change.
- anb10 7y agoIt would be fun to see at the end of the year that the worldwide cancellation of useless events (not picking on this particular one) had exactly zero economic impact.
- blhack 7y agoThere's a question I've proposed to some of my friends, which I will also propose here: Do you think that we will see Chinese style quarantining in the US? If not: why not? What do you think is different about the US that would allow us to attack this disease differently?
- animalnewbie 7y agoQuarantining isn't a magic wand. It needs a lot of manpower who is also dedicated. The enforcers in China are communist party members. China can build a 1000bed hospital in 10 days. In America that's the time needed for PowerPoint slides during meetings and money-funneling off it.
- blhack 7y agoSo are you saying we won't do these quarantines simply because we can't?
- PeterisP 7y agoNot the parent poster; but yeah, that and also because of the expected resistance (possibly violent) by the population; it seems that the Chinese have mostly been compliant with the quarantines and it seems that Americans will not be as compliant, so any quarantine attempts will be less effective, bring less benefit.
- animalnewbie 7y agoThere are two sources of violence, at the risk of sounding politically incorrect. One would be whites in rural areas which wouldn't need quarantine. The other would be blacks in urban areas which sure would need quarantine. I know this may sound alarmist but do prepare for rioting if you're in an urban area.
- AtHeartEngineer 7y agoThere will likely be some resistance, but I don't agree that it will just be urban areas or that it has anything to do with race.
- spicyramen 7y agoSuch a bad timing Google Cloud is always a good event to attend. I guess AWS reinvent will be fine by the end of the year
- etxm 7y agoCheck up on how the Spanish Flu played out after the summer.
- stevespang 7y agoExpoWest in Anaheim, California near LAX just cancelled today, Educational stuff was scheduled to start tomorrow. The main floor opened Thursday. Typically over 60,000 people show up to talk health food, vitamin, sports, fitness, etc. I lost all my airfare (write off loss).
- m0zg 7y agoGood. In-person events are _very_ environmentally irresponsible, and unnecessary.
- throw03172019 7y agoDoes anyone know what happens to the Airline tickets? The expo booth shipping/handling? Do the companies eat the cost? Some of the big booths can cost thousands to ship to the conference and typically get shipped out weeks prior (for cheaper rates / slower transit).
