Yep, 1080 is still (sadly) considered not too bad for a laptop.
- okaycan 7y agoMay I ask why is 1080 sad? I have been on 1366x768 during the early 2010s. But switch to 1080 over the last couple of years. While my personal desktop is on 1440p, 1080 is still very much a 'good enough' resolution for corporate work and day-to-day browsing usage. I see this trend to stick around for the next 5 years at least because most consumers don't really see non-marginal benefit in moving to 1440p.
- chrisseaton 7y ago> May I ask why is 1080 sad? A serious laptop these days might have 1800 rows or so. 1080 is pretty miserable. Pixels are going to be large and blocky and text (which is what most corporate work and day to day browsing is) is going to be blurry and poorly defined.
- genS3 7y agoactually most of the time laptops (beside super expensive macbooks) are very bad at using 4k and the screen look way blurier than a nice sony vaio 1080p screen (what an amazin computer it was) from almost 10 years ago. especially with windows still sucking at really handling 4k
- kadoban 7y ago1440 is a thing, you don't have to go right to 4k (which yeah is often going to be a mistake in a budget to mid-tier machine).
- cnasc 7y agoEven MacBooks are scaled to something that looks like a crisper 1440x900 (the 13-inch at least). And they aren’t 4K native resolution. It’s nice to have better looking font, but it’s the kind of feature that sort of disappears for me over a long session unless I’m comparing 2 displays. In terms of usable screen space, 1080p can be either adequate or a little too much depending on display size. I have to zoom my X270 in a bit.
- int_19h 7y agoI run a 4K desktop and a 4K laptop, and both have excellent visuals with crisp text on Win10. The only things that still suck at 4K are old apps, but there's only so much the OS can do about them short of just refusing to run apps that are too old (which is the Apple way of handling such things).
- Dylan16807 7y agoIf you get a screen appropriate for running at 2x zoom then there shouldn't be any visual problems caused by the rescaling.
- mixmastamyk 7y agoI have two Dell 4k monitors that allow for incredibly sharp text. Weren't that expensive. Can pry them out of my cold dead hands. Only thing I wish for is a squarer aspect ratio, 16:10, 3:2, etc, which (even more) sadly aren't allowed any more.
- kxrm 7y agoYup, the Microsoft Surface line has really spoiled me here. I was hoping to see more 3:2 ratio displays as a result. Not sure why but everything just went wrap around or double wide instead of a more productive A9 ratio. I have heard rumors that Microsoft will release a display to compliment the line. I hope it's true.
- Can_Not 7y ago1080p is barely big enough for 2 windows side-by-side. A bit short in general, too. We had 1920x1200 before the 16:9 craze took over (a decade ago?).
- tasty_freeze 7y agoI have the reverse problem. I want a laptop with a 1TB SSD, but those seem to appear only in configurations with other premium options, such as 4K displays. My 55 year old eyes can't see 4K resolution, so I'd prefer to save the money, power, and time not painting them. 1920x1080 works for me.

- abacadaba 7y agoare nvme slots a thing yet? i have a 1tb one. it's pretty tiny. it cost me $70. why is it so hard to put one of these inside a laptop?
- llampx 7y agoIts really not that hard to find a laptop with upgradeable SSDs and even RAM. We just have to stop buying laptops with soldered, non-upgradeable everything.
- _wzsf 7y agoYou can buy a 1TB SATA SSD for like $120 or a 1TB NVMe SSD for around twice that.
- kadoban 7y agoIt really depends on the laptop how easy that replacement is, but yeah that can be a _great_ option. A friend got a great deal on a laptop that would have been perfect except it was spinning-rust-only. So we upgraded that to an SSD and saved probably $400 for an hours work.
- phonon 7y agoThere are plenty of under $500 laptops with 15.6" FHD IPS screens that you can upgrade the RAM, M2 and 2.5" storage slots. I just updated a $300 Acer with 16 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD, cost me less than $200 extra.
- jpalomaki 7y ago1920x1080 on 14” and you don’t need scaling. That’s the reason why I go with that resolution. Scaling is still not perfect on Windows.
