Yeah the horde of edgelords in WPD totally isn't one of the reasons the sub got quarantined.
Gore will always be considered shock content, but the comments in WPD are almost always downright repulsive.
- 1123581321 8y agoCan you elaborate? I assumed that quarantining a sub was about the posts, rather than the comments. This is based on my experience of every subreddit having lots of offensive comments (granted, mostly downvoted.)
- ssnistfajen 8y agoPosts and comments are all contents. Offensive posts will not spawn inoffensive comments. In WPD you can probably get more upvotes by being more offensive. From what I've seen there, it's usually the ones trying to call for basic decency being downvoted.
- linkingday 8y agoTo somewhat further your point, take a look at /r/greentext and /r/4chan. While the posts themselves are only somewhat racist, the comments that accompany them are disgustingly edgy and juvenile - they're not being downvoted however. I don't think anything is likely to be done to these subreddits.
- ModFightsCron 8y agoYes. Let's ban repulsive stuff defined by democratic vote. Since the country is mostly Christian, no more talking about gay people - that's repulsive. Welcome to Russia. What is downright repulsive is people who think like you do. Here's an idea - you don't like it, don't go to the subreddit and let them do what they want. We don't need people like you dictating the repulsiveness level of what others can say. I know it makes you feel more in control of your life, but who would want to live like you do? That would be one sad existence.
- bleriot 8y agoA lot of subs are full of edgelords. The sub was quarantined because they need to make Reddit more palatable to investors and advertisers.
- MRD85 8y agoA lot of subreddits had that happen to them. It's sad because they are choosing who can speak and who cannot.
- rhizome 8y agoPerhaps interestingly, this is exactly what people criticize Twitter/Jack for not doing.
- vonmoltke 8y agoThe problem is, it's generally different people in those cases. These two groups are fundamentally opposed, and satisfying them both is impossible.
- rhizome 8y agoYou're right, when GP says "people want less X for Y" and I say "people want more X for Z," we aren't talking about the same "people."
- throwaway773321 8y agoYeah like /r/theredpill
- deminature 8y agoThey're not stopping those people from speaking, they're just hiding that content from average users. It's reasonable to think the average redditor probably doesn't want to see death videos alongside their cat pictures and memes.
- 8y ago
- pc86 8y agoWhich has nothing to do with the content.
- mattigames 8y ago"edgelords"? Really? That's the best word you found to describe them?
- alexanderdmitri 8y agoWhat would you suggest?
- mattigames 8y agoOffensive? Anyway got dowvoted a lot so maybe "edgelords" its the best word for it! Even I should start using it against people I dissagree with.
- Aeolun 8y agoIt doesn’t mean you disagree with them. It’s that they write their comments for maximum shock value. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s hardly desirable.
- mattigames 8y agoThat's the intended meaning, but someone could always call someone else that just to dismiss their argument pretending that it was said for shock value instead of persuasion; and for what I have read that's how it is commonly used.
- Aeolun 8y agoThat’s a possibility, but most well reasoned and argued thoughts do not turn into a shock piece, so I’m inclined to think not.
- RobLach 8y agoFighting/dealing with that repulsion is an endeavor some people seek.
- jotm 8y agoEh, they went back to Youtube. I've read the vilest, most shocking and dumbest comments on Youtube (and they had quite a few upvotes) - Reddit is meek by comparison.
- dageshi 8y agoThat's cause to my knowledge you can't downvote on youtube, or rather you can thumbs down but I don't think it has any effects on comments.
- irrational 8y agoDare I ask what an edgelord is?
- DaiPlusPlus 8y agoImagine someone who makes an edgy joke, then imagine someone who makes only edgy jokes, constantly - then they stop being funny.
- hexane360 8y agoIt's the difference between making jokes that are edgy and jokes whose sole component is shock value.
- michaelbuckbee 8y agoUrban dictionary definition - https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=edgelord https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=edgelord But in general people who try to be "edgy" and "dark" to a fairly ridiculous degree.
- rchaud 8y agoIt's when you behave online like you are 15 years old. Everything about you has to scream 'enlightened contrarian' or 'devil's advocate' otherwise you'll become one of those conformists clicking their fingers to Taylor Swift and Imagine Dragons. Conversations with them are impossible and frustrating because they aren't looking to talk to someone, they're looking to talk AT someone and collect as many upvotes as possible.
- calvinmorrison 8y agoso the entirety of /r/politics?
- Angostura 8y agoI think you are confusing edgelord with circlejerk.
- triplesec 8y agoThen surely you just don't subscribe to that subreddit. I don't like the Trumpy subreddits and their horribleness, but, sadly, I can't see why I should stop them.
- amvalo 8y agoI think WPD is genuinely important. There are edgelords, sure. Watching and thinking seriously about what I saw there changed my perspective on life.
- culot 8y agoI usually can't stand to watch the videos, but the discussions on mortality and the precarious fragility of life in general I've found valuable. Because of that sub I am more careful in many situations and do value life much more.
