I've been hearing about sweeteners and gut flora for years and it still seems inconclusive. If there's a smoking gun it seems like it's hard to find and we've been eating artificial sweeteners for decades. What's cr

Reminder to read the ingredient list on everything. Something I do anyway but I realize I'm a nerd and many consumers don't want to do this.

Yeah, but only by adding a clutch or something to prevent the drag when the motor is coasting. I'm a little confused by this, I thought the motor would turn into a generator in that situation.

Depending on the temperature of the object there will be a characteristic distribution of wavelengths. It's tricky because a hot object will only radiate specific wavelengths, based on how the heat is generated. That's why the con

Those DIN connectors were used in the "Ueberspielkabel" of my childhood. Germany decided to use 5 pin DIN as stereo cables, two in two out with one ground.

It's interesting to see the comments on his post. A good percentage is just "very impressive". What's the point of that? Just hoping he'll see your name and say "good employee"?

Oh, I visit regularly, should have clarified, but would not move back there. I very much enjoy the lack of bureaucracy and the amount of open space here in the NW of the US.

Ok, so it seems like the German preference for stability over risk-taking is still the same as when I left Germany in the 90s. I only worked at a few startups and have been at a stable company for 20 yrs now. What I'm noticing is that

If you add "... in field [x] or application space [y]" to the question it might lead to a useful discussion but as-is the question is too broad.

I remember Transputer enthusiasm when I was in college, we got some boards and even built our own, but it was really not practical and the toolchains were lacking. Even back then it seemed like something more like the GPUs we have today wit

Sorry, poor wording. What I should have said is that the overall educational system ends up letting a smaller percentage of the population into universities, partially because sorting happens as early as age 10.

Engineering, at least the ME and EE kind, is kind of a middle ground. Some physics/math envy in the sense that we usually have to use fudge factors to make our designs work in real life. Of course we're too busy making stuff to sp

Be interesting to see when these features showed up. I learned C from the K&R book back in the day and it doesn't mention most of these. Designated initializer is something I'll try to remember, seems handy.
