I think the term "rite of passage" may have prompted the response. A rite of passage is generally something that every member of a culture (or subculture) goes through to get from X to Y.

The attacks on torrent sites have little to do with headlines and more to do with the reality that they are critical points in the distribution of information people don't want shared. To many people the distinction you point out is meaning

Here's a video tour of their offices circa 1993, for those who haven't seen it. I think this is a cool look into the beginnings of the company and the (early) excitement surrounding Doom at the time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q65xJfVk

Why is Comcast cutting people off for a year instead of just charging per GB above the cap or upgrading to a higher class service? This is a punishment without a trial.

Yes, I agree. Isn't Comcast abusing their position here to protect their cable business? My friends recently got cut off for going over their limit; well they went over their limit because its a house of 4 using Netflix and downloading game

What people can do and what they do do are a little different. I can't think of anyone who stopped building their rig at $3k, but it's possible to produce demo-quality records with a $600 computer, a nice A/D/A converter and software like R

I think the cost problem has largely been solved. Someone can throw together a DAW for $2 or $3k and start creating really great sounding music following hours of practice. I think most young musicians know about and go this route when they

I feel like Chomsky's argument is being mischaracterized a little here. I don't think Chomsky is necessarily looking for 'simple' rules, but he wants models that explain. Norvig is looking at statistical models that can predict what is goin

According to one source I found[1], 60 meters of DAT tape holds 1300mb of data. That's 21.67mb per meter. My gmail inbox is 679mb, thats about 31 meters of DAT tape. [1] http://menehune.opt.wfu.edu/Kokua/SGI/007-2861-005/sgi_html/...

People who work in the music production see a lot wider spaces inbetween subtle variations in sound than most of us. There are as many ways to construct a song as there are to construct a program, even if you know the "general idea."
