In the US judges tend to be elected. That's not the norm around the world. US judges must to a certain extent be politicans, and "being tough on crime" plays well to the electorate. Many probably do feel their sentences are a

I'm in Tauranga -- I have gigabit fibre, reasonable taxes, an amazing Prime Minister and a 3-5 hour time difference with Silicon Valley depending on the season. I am fortunate enough to have a remote job for a distributed company but I

Unfortunately it took a couple of generations! At a macro level, everything will be fine eventually, you're right. But short term pain regardless.

Yes, don't mean to minimise the challenge of having a home office that befits the name. While I am fortunate enough to have the space, my company does provide a stipend for people without it to e.g. rent a desk at a co-working space. M

Your home office is not a home office. My fear, being a proponent of distributed work, is that high-profile places will half-heartedly try it due to the current circumstances, declare it to be a failure, and take us two steps back.

I also bought a copy of the Cuckoo's Egg when I was 12ish and devoured it. Then figured out enough about BBSes and the weird link some of them had to be able to send email to write him some fan-mail, to which he graciously replied. Tha

I usually go with a Django or RoR monolith, something that I know I can run on a cheap DO droplet or similar, and while there's a fixed monthly cost it's reasonable and I can scale up with ease (albeit manually). If I were explici

Boring is in the eye of the beholder. Sports like soccer and the longer forms of cricket are the opposite of boring to those who value suspense more than constant "action" (where I use "action" to mean the scoring mechan
