That's a better explanation. There is a clear Smalltalk influence in Ruby, especially around the object-oriented aspects of the language. The best example is how the language doesn't call function, but sends a message to a method.

The next evolution is something that also sandboxes the project. A random npm library that gets installed shouldn't be allowed to access anything other than your project root. But it also has to be fast and convenient. Docker is still

I'm not sure if it's obvious but direnv also works with zsh. It's loading the .envrc with bash, then capturing the env diff, and reflecting that back to the host shell. direnv is still back-compat with macOS's bash 3.x,

Hi, direnv author here. direnv is pretty old by computer standard and it's still weird for me to see it pop-up from time to time. I wrote this tool for myself and it's amazing to see it being useful to others. Feel free to ask me

If you can, provide on-demand environments for PRs. It's mostly helpful to test frontend changes, but also database migrations and just demoing changes to colleagues. If you have that, you will see people's behaviour change. We ha

The pre-order queue might not be a thing anymore. At least for me, I ordered the antenna in January 2022 and got it the same month.

Yet another explanation: we have imperative languages, functional languages, and declarative languages. Ordered by level of abstraction. Prolog fits in the latter category, together with SQL and LINQ.

"Kubernetes is a cluster operating system" makes sense. Some of the complexity of Kubernetes also feels like the early days of Linux where you had to basically build your own Linux distribution. Even with managed solutions like EK

Technically, it should be possible to pass a file descriptor to a docker process, but I haven't seen that before. I don't like all parts of systemd but I think the socket activation is pretty elegant. The decoupling also allows to

It's the same but a bit different. Inetd is listening to a port and then for each new connection, spawning a new process, binding stdin/stout to the socket pair. The main issue was that it could lead to system resource exhaustion

If Caddy were to support systemd socket activation, this self-restart dance is not necessary as the parent process (systemd) is holding the socket for you. And for other systems, they can use https://github.com/zimbatm/

HTTP Basic Auth could be so much better with a little help from browsers. If it was a bit better, most websites wouldn't need to implement login pages over and over again. Plus it would be more secure since the popup is in its own secu

According to eSIM.net, eSIMs cannot be moved between phones. This is a pretty big step back IMO. If you want to keep the same phone number, the only way is to buy another eSIM for the new phone, and then use the PUK to transfer the old numb

I wish browsers would render text/markdown. It's easy to write, theme, and host. I know it's not the best text format out there but it's reasonable to write and read for most cases.
