Well, I'd never read it before, so it was new to me. And it was an interesting story, and I expect there to be conversation about the value of metrics when any metric can be faked. The first thought I had after reading this was "What matter

It's sad to think that some people derive their hope entirely from the lottery. I wish there was more of a fervent drive to discover how to make money rather than just win it.

I don't know if I could call my work start-ups. I make web sites. Sometimes people like them and communities form. Start-up to me implies something more.

Apple's actually not got very good PR at all. Not in this sense of direct interaction. When they're distant from the user they can polish up something fierce. They craft excellent commercials, help guides, online tutorials, keynote speeches

I haven't used Lego in a decade and yet I might buy this set. Architecture fascinates me, Lego used to, and I'm really happy they're doing an entire series on architecture.

Might as well create the "male singer checklist", where we mention all the perks rock stars have that programmers never will.

Why does one have to be above the other at all? Zuckerberg made something really cool. I'm of the stance that we should excuse the guy for his failings since he still ended up with a neat product. It's hardly his fault that Facebook became

I hate that get-rich get-huge mentality. It's seen here a lot, too. People want every one of their ideas to become globe-wide industries. Fact is, most ideas aren't good enough to grow that big, and that's not a bad thing. I'd rather be mod

An ebook reader that accesses Gutenberg is not controversial in the least. Most apps aren't denied. But the ones that are denied aren't always denied for logical reasons. Baby Shaker was approved. Eucalyptus was denied. That's messed up.

That's kind of what I'd figure. Nothing tech-focused: just people deciding whether they want a particular person as a constant presence on the web site.

An IRC panel, perhaps? Private torrent sites handle things that way. Prospective members go on Mibbit and ask IRC for an invite, and the IRC people determine if the person seems like a cool person. No outright rejection, since anybody can s

Until very recently, I had no faculty for buying things online. It wasn't poverty, it was lack of a credit card. So I have a latent bias against blunt user fees without any trial first. That may be coloring my opinion here.

Money works for some things. It worked for Metafilter. It would not work for Hacker News, where until recently the best thing it had going for it was how nobody knew about it. Its apathy towards gaining users gave it a real edge. But hacker

You underestimate how many of us are college students. The functionality of Hacker News is very basic. It's the community that matters. Charing money would reduce the community, and somebody would quickly make an alternative site for people

Steven Frank of Panic said it best: "Of course, it’s not all bad. As everyone knows, the iPhone app submission process works like this: Develop app / Submit app / App rejected / Blogs raise a stink / App approved. So, these guys are merely

You know an article is good when Rob Enderle is quoted. It'll be tough to unseat Google, but Microsoft already knows this. I'd love to think that they learned that from Live, which was an excellent search engine that still happened to look

They wanted to become the "Youtube for documents" and they did. Nobody that I know of has a better docstorage method, and, like Youtube, Scribd feels cheap and often gives me results that lied about what they were to get views. I'm not mad

I guess I've been brainwashed through having Google's logo in my face since my youth, but I don't mind the colors or the spikiness of the font. It's vastly better than Yahoo's, anyway, which screams childishness in my face.

If two people hand in the same essay in school, how do you know who actually wrote it? It is a judgment. A judgment based on things like writing style analysis, which is pretty easy. I have blogs steal my posts wholesale pretty often, and

I don't get why people don't like the Google logo. It's playful and it's simple. It's a bit childish, but it gets away with that since it appears on a blank white page and so it's not conflicting with any other elements. I do prefer their w

If you don't like Techcrunch, don't be a dick about it in Techcrunch articles. Either don't comment, or don't mention explicitly that you didn't read the article, so that you only get called out for it when you say appallingly stupid things
