So the fact that I hold a contrary opinion is being an ass? No. The fact that you responded snottily makes you an ass. You're allowed to disagree, but it irks me when people get smug over a difference of opinion.

Google was on my mind when I wrote this. They've already lost it. Microsoft isn't necessarily worthy of contempt, but I don't respect what they do now. They've lost it. Apple hasn't, at least not yet.

When was the last time one of these insiders was right about a product launch? They were blatantly wrong about the iPhone, Apple TV, the iPod, the iPod mini, the video iPod, and so on. The only leak I can recall was the unibody leak, and th

Apple's followed an unusual path because their current tyrannies are much different from typical tech tyrannies. This decision doesn't help them as a company, and it doesn't hedge any corporate maneuver of theirs. It seems absolutely ridicu

You're separating Gates from his company. Microsoft started off as a fresh and exciting company, and it's gotten a bit stinky. So his case is valid.

You're allowed to install unapproved software. You just can't jailbreak your computer and then expect to download Apple's new updates, most of which rely on their streamlined system's not being broken. I find that I have everything I need o

Most of my Mac-using friends use Adium and Firefox. Some of them even understand what plugins are. I've got a friend or two who've skinned their Mac, though why anybody would dislike Leopard's version of Aqua rather baffles me. Typical Wind

The Mac in 84 onwards was run by a man who thought Apple had to sacrifice its design integrity to succeed. Since then it has been placed back in Jobs' hands, and he's taken a decade to fill it with people who believe in his design philosoph

That's the double edge that comes from any ease of access. Mibbit makes IRC very simple and very easy, and so more people use it, and with people come trolls. That said, if you're looking to access IRC easily, that's the way to go.

I'm going to be a fuddy-duddy and say: most of these apps are not essential for the Mac. Lots of them are nice, but you can skip them entirely when you're just getting started. Here are the ones I consider absolute essentials for my daily
