It's about leverage. If they can build equal or better things than what they built inside of Facebook, it makes it easy and likely for Facebook to acquire them. At best Facebook can copy them, but then they are chasing their own tail. If

Skype works. Sometimes the sound is hard to deal with. However, consider that there are probably 20 other people in your same situation who will hack out a quick skype video. Keep it simple don't overthink the stuff.

Some good points made here, but I think the gloom and doom is a little overstated. Facebook went through the same thing for awhile and then created facebook lite, then rolled more simplicity back into their main app. A company like twitter
