Exactly. I forgot which exact essay but Paul Graham has a great point about most controversies in philosophy being an argument over imprecise definitions. Exceptionally intelligent, young would-be philosophers see this and thus choose not

In all honesty, I would if it meant not having to smell cigarette smokers' smoke in public places. And the obscene amount of refined sugar in our diets isn't doing us any favors. A couple months sugar-free and everyone's pal

100% agree. Isn't this the same situation with alcohol and tobacco?

If it means anything to you, I enjoy being hyper-critical, and shitting on strangers on the internet has a special place in my heart, but that poem is pretty good. I'd read more if you published it.

I'm not questioning that your lecturer said that, but in any particular case, shouldn't adding scientists and engineers be zero-sum? Must it not help one side and hurt the other?

And what about personal responsibility? In the calculus of renting vs buying a home you gain flexibility in renting. You can pick up and leave with minimal hassle. The risk you incur by doing so is that housing and rental prices might go

I didn't pass judgement on anybody, but I understand how the question could come off that way. It's more that I just have a suspicion that the asshole brother probably has a very different story to tell. But, we'll never kn

His visa expired the day before he left "the place". That his train would make it across the border in the wee hours of the morning is not legally relevant.

Precisely. Adding 0 to the front of an infinite series is shifting every term by one to the right. It's not clear that shifting terms in series keeps the sum the same. For instance, re-arranging infinitely many terms in conditionall

This is normally called the integers modulo N, and this is not a useful way to look at this infinite sum. One way to tell is that if you didn't already know the answer, there's no way to get it from the construction.
