Obvious really. Kids aren't coming to school? Chip them and punish them if they don't carry their card or aren't where they're supposed to be. Much better than thinking about the long term and figuring out, oh I don't know, why they're not

Kids should be introduced to a variety of systems and platforms and given enough information to make up their own minds. I love the open source ideology and the tools which have grown out of it, but I can also appreciate that closed systems

I've heard it from one of the karate instructors I've corresponded with (although in that context it was less of a dismissive phrase and more a cautionary one for our own training). Regardless of the origin, it's a good one.

I'm curious as to what the upgrade situation is with Android devices and apps. Do developers just keep support for legacy versions in their apps? If so, do all the people sporting the new hotness have to put up with that. On the Mac side of

That's just awesome. My vim just got a hell of a lot better just from reading that (which probably tells you something about the level I've been operating at for the last 15 years or so).

No, but I'm sure we _can_ all agree that map quality and POI quantity/accuracy will vary significantly by area. Let's not detract from the real problem here: the lack of sea monsters and other mythical beasts in all smartphone mapping offer

Fairly sure one of my old dumbphones had canned texts for phone calls. One of the good things about Apple is precisely what lot of people here are complaining about: they tell you what you can do with your phone and why it's neat. Samsung h

Considering the blog post's title, it sure does make some sweeping generalisations. Why on earth is this on the front page?

Well, given Google's past history with iOS apps, they might just release a shit app. Your data is only as good as your interface to it.

The bits that have been 'wildly wrong' so far seems to be the business integration (which is probably also the most easily corrected). I wonder if the people who went to the effort of posting screenshots with "lolz, this business should be

From an efficiency point of view, what about all of these bulbs which will now be drawing power 24/7 for the wifi components, along with everything else in the house that has a standby function? Just get LED bulbs and use the off switch.

From the article, I particularly liked the bit about math being useful to doctors so that they can learn to succeed in the face of a challenging subject... as if medicine isn't enough of a challenge in itself. I would certainly like to see

Not to pick on spelling in a spelling thread, but quite frankly "security breeches" sound awesome :) Unless of course they're adult diapers for the discerning (and ageing) security professional.

I think the OP in that thread is a mix of rose coloured glasses and sour grapes (sour grape coloured glasses?). The rebuffs are mostly of the "D3 does just what D2 did despite what you said!" variety. About the only thing that I felt was pr

I think the Fallout 1/2/Tactics system would be great. It gives enough complexity to make the combat truly tactical (position, range, cover, aimed shots etc), with the added advantage that these days you can have a nice 3D engine experience
