The fun thing is that if they got rid of things like segmentation (make segment register instructions fault), 90%+ of modern x86 user mode code would still work.

My understanding is that AMD probably originally designed SYSRET assuming that SS contained the correct values already (except SS.DPL of course, which I guess is where the stuff where they set it to RPL comes from). When they designed x86-6

The story is that Intel later introduced XSAVEOPT etc to speed up XSAVE by only saving modified state.

Intel has patented x86 for a long time now though. VME, SYSENTER/SYSEXIT, and even long NOPs were all patented for example (now all expired).

One patent is https://patents.google.com/patent/US6721866B2 which is for LDDQU and probably would not matter for an emulator. I wonder about https://patents.google.com/patent/US7155601B2/en w

Remember the priority dates of Pentium 4 SSE2 patents released in Nov 2000 are probably around 1999 at the latest for example. SSE1 itself is just a subset of SSE2 with only single precision floating point instructions BTW. That itself was

A law prohibiting employers from asking questions is much easier to enforce than anti-discrimination laws. I would still be willing to compromise by limiting anti-discrimination laws to manual labor jobs though.

What is fun is that x86-64 ended up having CPU vendor dependent things like SYSENTER vs SYSCALL (and even SYSCALL ended up having a bunch of vendor dependent things about it too). Win10 had to add INT 2E to the 64-bit kernel for 32-bit syst

Thinking about it, printing money using basic income might make the demand for ads increase. The economy would be basically based on how much basic income consumers spend.

For this kinds of thing, I am thinking that it might be worth it to do a "web browser" mode which uses 128-bit vectors and a "web server" mode which use 256-bit.

I have been thinking of a standard for example for how much space these results can take on the screen.

I imagine that LibreOffice's Office binary format code is much different from MS Office's own and probably much more robust to invalid input. Of course, this comes at the cost of compatibility.

I actually wrote my poorly written wishlist for Satya partly in response to Scott Hanselman's post. The most important of these right now are probably patents. I have this submission on FAT: https://news.ycombinator.com/
