Those "UNIX BASICS + ASSEMBLY" courses are where I'd expect it in that list... Not sure how you could cover those without at least mentioning them.

While I'm not sure I agree with you (this does not seem like it was done out of malice), I think it's interesting to note that MS employees probably need to be careful about adding fairly innocent changes/differences to popul

To be fair, Firefox is planning on extending the chrome API for addons after (or really around the same time, in all likelihood) it reaches compatibility as well. If it weren't, Firefox wouldn't realistically be able to deprecate

Nope, it's UB[0]. While not everything that doesn't work on every platform is UB, plenty of things are . Consider signed integer overflow, which is a common source of UB. To be clear, UB means the compiler is allowed to e.g. tota

The reason I would prefer !! (or != 0) is that there are far too many err, non-bool bools. Even if you know for sure it's the stdbool.h bool, the next reader might not be aware -- presuming that when you do this you care about the dist

My experience is that it's extremely uncommon, including on physics systems. While I no longer work in games, I did for several years, I probably can count the times that I used double precision on one hand (if you exclude the JavaScri

This is not a good argument, Vulkan is both brand new and much more difficult to support than other graphics APIs. Also Vulkan support doesn't fix busted drivers, wonky fullscreen, OS integration, etc. It also doesn't fix audio, o

The python runtime is fairly heavyweight, on the order of megabytes, unless I'm mistaken. This would be something that would be downloaded with every page request (although it may be cached in most cases)... So I'm not sure it wil

Most of the articles I see on C performance tuning are generalizable to any programming language, GC or no. Stuff like maintaining cache coherency, avoiding false sharing for threaded code, etc. I don't write java, but my impression is

If you're writing C code, the right way to think about data structures in a lot of cases is that they're an optimization. You can implement a map using an array of struct { key, value }, and O(n) search. If you keep it sorted, tha

That's not the only difference, or even an important one for performance. Servo's WebRender engine gets 60fps (or in the hundreds if uncapped) on many pages where Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc. all struggle in the 5-15fps range. (Of

I've written a good amount of rust, and a ton of C/C++, and, well, the compiler complaining about the type, or, well, anything really, is far more likely in Rust than C or C++

Lets say you've thrown away the ast, don't have a token stream, etc, but do still have access to the source of the function. Getting the function length is O(1). At worst, its a subtraction. Lexing it is considerably more expensiv

Its not harder. You know exactly where that function can return, with exceptions its very hard to know what might throw in practice.

Strongly agree. RAII without exceptions is fine. Exceptions are deeply flawed for code understandability, and anything you get by doing work that can fail in the ctor is mot worth it.

If your language of choice comes with a runtime that's not shipped in the browser, WASM doesn't seem like it will make speed into a non-issue, it will just frontload the slowness.

OTOH comments easily become outdated, and it's painfully easy to make a change that subtly invalidates a comment in another file. They're like lines of code that is never tested or run. For calculations, I'm not really sure I

Have you considered that maybe event-driven programming is problematic? As I see it, its basically letting you ignore the context code is called in, but the issue with that is, well, IME failing to understand that properly is where nearly a

A unicode_next_character function is very simple to write regardless of unicode support in your language. I usually write it as a small (256 byte) lookup table where each entry tells you how many characters to skip next. If you don't u

A lot of the time that type names end up in method parameters, it's due to a lack of support of overloading in the language. In particular, isn't Dart (the language described here) one such language? It's been a while since I
