I would go the other way. What can China do to me unless I go there? Vs what can the US do to me since I live there, and even if I don’t live there, the US government reach is a lot wider.

I would argue if you are American nor Chinese, the US has a greater ability to negatively influence your life. Chinese government has full control domestically but can’t (currently) do too much outside of their borders. The US on the other

We definitely weren't at the very bottom of the ladder. We had some stable income, a roof over our heads and food on the table. Looking back the financial position we were in was clearly temporary. But at the time it wasn't so cle

I think it's also about trade offs that are made. For example, TV dinners (from an article in another thread here) for us was not a staple, it was a luxury. They kept for a long time, but they were also high cost to calorie ratio. We

I grew up poor (first gen immigrant family, the poor kind), so I empathize with the points raised. At the same time I don't really understand how some / a family can be (outside of some circumstances like health issues, disabiliti

The threshold isn’t just “it’s possible”. There needs to be some evidence. All sorts of things are possible, doesn’t mean we go around thinking they are true, or even assume they are potentially true. It’s not Impossible I’ve murdered someo

Big difference between the general statement of "vote rigging is impossible" and "this last election wasn't rigged". The usual claim is the latter, not the former.

I don't know if it's that black and white. The risk calculus changes based on stage of the startup for example. Joining doordash pre IPO is still more risky than google, but I there's some reasonable confidence it'll be

Is it just a matter of degrees though? Lots of people have ruined lives (sometimes ended lives) due to alcohol as well. We expect people to use alcohol responsibly, and there is social stigma and other consequences when it's not used r

Problem with TSLA and GME is they are only meme stocks in hindsight. You may have gotten lucky on those and gotten in early enough, but that’s not a strategy. Hypothetically let’s say analyzing sentiment on some narrow range of data like WS

I don't see how those lessons are actionable? I mean yes to make money in stock picking all you have to do is buy low and sell high. Question is can you do that consistently enough to make a better return than index funds?

same can be said for investing in lotteries. Also more upside, and if you're lucky, well that's all you need. So why not put 90% of your money into index funds and use the remaining 10% to buy lottery tickets?
