Aside from GNOME, one can also look at the Opera Browser community. Many of us were skeptical of the switch to being based on Chromium not because of browser, but because of the fear Opera would throw out many of the powerful features its u

I guess it depends on how the sample data is skewed as to what you can statistically gain from it. If it was collected fairly random without favoring any one audience, then there's lots of options. If not, then there's more restri

I'm just trying to understand your intentions for having the data, but it sounds like you didn't have a set reason for collecting the data other than for the sake of recording it? Not that one has to have a reason, but just presum

No explicit barriers yes, but many tend to participate more in discussions where they have an interest/opinion in the subject matter than ones there they do not. Even your previous comment about walking into a bar in Iowa reflects that

Yes, I was referring to HN discussions, not people in general. I wouldn't go up to random strangers on the street and ask them if they preferred php, python or ruby unless I wanted to perform some sort of sociological experiment :)

What do you want to do with the data? That can alter the tools/software one wishes to use with it.

I would say most people are just as opinionated about language, hardware and software choices as they are about politics. Though the participation threshold on most political topics is probably lower as politics tends to have a wider appeal

There's a few way to improve content without altering the system (which can take much longer and have positive/negative effects). One way to instantly get more diversity in content is to frequent the "new" page more ofte

The US Women's Suffrage Movement actually grew out of two things in the 19th century. Unfortuently, neither gets much recognition since historical media, reporting and education is a bit slanted to focusing on the last 60-70 years in A

We actually already lost a variety of bananas back in the 50s due to Panama Disease and it never recovered. The kind we eat now are reported to be less flavorful yet were resistant to the disease up until recently. There's plenty of ot

Perhaps I assume too much, but if nutrition and what one should eat were really as simple as what Soylent is trying to do, wouldn't NASA or the Soviet Space Program devised a solution like this for the Astronauts and Cosmonauts? Each p

Silly/ridiculous references can be easier to remember with less repetition of use (to me at least). The more literal meaning might be more straight forward, but the more absurd one imprints on the mind easier at times. One of the silli

Sometimes I will use it in a conversation when referring to a third party unknown to the person I am talking to and the subject's gender has no bearing (like in my first comment). For example, "Oh, I know a guy that knows X,"

True and I agree, but those games aren't considered AAA (since the definition of AAA is based on money spent as the sole criteria). Plenty of games have been AAA, of above average quality, and longer than 10 hours in the past 4-5 years
