Interestingly, I started hating PHP when first doing a personnal project in college. It was a complete unmaintainable mess. Later, when I used it professionally, I learned to do things right (using frameworks and the like) and started likin

I always wonder, when people say they don't mind about piracy, what part of it is genuine, and what part of it is pandering. Do they really mean what they say? Or do they secretly hope there would be no way to pirate their products?

China is slowing, but surely, going towards a service oriented economy. The stated goal of the PRC governement for their next 5-year plan was to move from 40% of the economy in services to 70%. This goal is, IMHO, attainable for China which

A predictable result. I'm surprised though, that the Indian government (or any government for that matter) was able to react so fast.

AFAIK, Hong Kong is a fairly safe place earthquake wise. The main natural danger there is the typhoons.

"I decided to confess because they'd caught me". Reminds me of when I was studying in china. A Pakistani student was caught doing something mildly illegal (renting an apartment off-campus without the university's permission), and was caught

China recently started requiring ID to get a mobile phone. They may be tracking only foreigners, and only those after they started to require ID. It actually may be that they have people listening in on calls, and it wouldn't take too much

Someone once sent us a cover letter stating he was eager to work with "the experts at our famous company". This might help when trying out for Google, or any other actually famous company, but when you're asking for a job at an unknown comp

What I don't get, economically speaking, is how we can both be in a bubble and in a barely recovering economy. In other words, how do these angels and VCs still have that much money to invest in such companies?

I'm always amazed at the capacity people have for yelling at you when they are asking for a favor. What is going on inside someone's head? It's like "you need my help, don't make me hate you!".

Eclipse is a platform, and a lot of plugins are there to make it usable for your language(s). Where IDEA is only Java, Eclipse lets me do PHP too. As I do both regularly, it's a compelling "feature".

Really interesting piece, but the end falls short. I would have loved to see concrete solutions and possible implementations. It felt like the article was building up to that.

I'd like to see a precise description of what the PRC government did, and how it appears to the end users. Not sure that's possible though...

I believe there is a strong cultural bias to where people go when they graduate. In France, the situation seems to be the exact opposite to the one in the US: there are 6 times more engineering schools as there are business schools. France

I've seen VC being called the "dark side" of entrepreneurship a few times (as in "I launched a startup, got a successful exit and I now turned to the dark side of VC"). It's of course partly joking, but probably also revealing of how VCs ar
