Good question. This is my opinion, but I feel I've got facts to back it up. I don't want them using iPads because I consider the walled garden of apple to be hostile and predatory. Specifically, this is a place where I cannot cont

That's a good idea. Does that require pihole or something? I've got that installed but wasn't aware that I could do that. I'm not aware of how you can throttle traffic without intercepting on the device directly.

It's a fight between me, my wife and YouTube, sadly. But, your advice is 100% correct.

I've been experimenting with making a Firefox plugin to hobble YouTube. I don't want to outright ban it (easily done using /etc/hosts) because there is good stuff on YouTube. I talked to a guy at a conference who seemed

As you point out, I am assuming malicious intent and you have every right to assume the same of me! I should have put that other part in. It just didn't jibe with me and still feels like it is an easy and obvious upgrade. But, you are

I was curious about the automated CLA process. It is interesting to me to read the answer about not supporting GitLab: https://github.com/cla-assistant/cla-assistant/issues/534 Very terse answer that says:

It's interesting to hear this when places like the Pacific Northwest seem to be getting more rain fall. With a warmer climate, the atmosphere holds more moisture and results in more rain. It's been speculated before, but when will

The irony of Icaza now working for M$ is thick. He's an amazing guy and I don't begrudge him at all.

I was discussing LLMs with a non technical person on the plane yesterday. I was explaining why LLMs aren't good at math. And, he responded, no, chatgpt is great a multivariate regression, etc. I'm using LLMs locally almost always

This is tangentially related but fascinating. A terrific movie called Minbo came out in Japan thirty or so years ago. It's about the Yakuza and not very flattering. The director was stabbed at the premier. Then, later, died of suicide

I love Observable. And, this is a phenomenal approach, untethering Observable from observablehq.com. I'm so excited. It probably goes without saying that EVERYONE should have a blog, and this approach from Observable means journalists

I've been working on an idea for a long time which is to break classic public domain books (in the original foreign language) into small chunks for study of the source language. An example passage is here (from one of the greatest work

I often feel frustrated by the community here but having this story be at the top of HN gives me so much hope for my little sheltered world. Kudos to Bob, and kudos to all the people of HN.

I used the "don't break the chain" rule to write a book and it was the only thing that kept me going through small kids and the inherent "distractions." It was interesting to read how demoralized the author was when

I would really like to see a comparison of damage to piers in California and Florida. The "costs" of hurricanes keeps rising, but Florida is also a place with a lot of insurance fraud, and it would be great to see an analysis of t

There is a trend towards using LLMs as backends to search engines. After reading this story, I can't help but think that those LLMs are going to be so much easier to hack than Google, which has a history and massive infrastructure to c
