I have to disagree. Some things will get crappier, and some things will improve. Yes there's hype, but whether it's the same as crypto hype depends on whether there's actually anything useful behind the hype, and unlike crypt

Parent is perhaps comedic but has a valuable point: This writeup is unapproachable for a general audience due to heavy use of meaningless (“brand”) names. For me it’s also a red flag: Neither system seems to be designed to be approachable.

It is a modern alternative to Meteor, Firebase, Supabase and similar, but it should be much easier to work with, especially from React. Unlike Meteor it has a relational DB and data is accessed via server-side functions. It's got some

People are not getting as much done, low performers are harder to manage (hide easier), most importantly people don’t build the same quality relationships they used to. This is uber important at a big tech company where ppl collaborate with

I agree with you on TS being unsound. Flow on the other hand strove for soundness, as does Hack. Unfortunately TS dominated thanks to good strategy and some better ergonomics for open source (which were not a focus for FB). Rust is more ML

Nowadays my primary concern is readability and understandability. Thrown into a codebase, can I understand what's going on? OCaml (which at FB was used to write the Flow typechecker and Hack compiler afair) favored higher order functio

I watched a random segment from Stalker, the embedded movie, and at 15:10 the woman gets in the car and the subtitles say "Come with me", while the character clearly says "Go!". Very confusing. The auto-generated subtitl

Is there a free API for historical data? I wanted to answer questions like: What was the weather like on this day in last x years, or what is the average in some place in a given month based on last x years?

I like Rust but I’m constantly surprised by how hard simple math involving subtraction and or division is, and how there’s little to no advice in the docs about best practices. The math code ends up being littered with `as another-number-ty

I took an OS class but wonder nonetheless: If you aim for 0 compatibility, perhaps even can design your cpu, could an OS be much simpler? Could some standard components (paging etc.) be avoided altogether? Or is what we have a minimal set a

I’m not sure the analogy stands. Getting consistent margins is not as hard as building an AAA game imho. It’s more about building the right abstractions and having consistent attention to detail.

Yeah but would I tell my mom to pay a dollar on this site? Would she trust it? Does she need a website or does an email/google doc satisfy her needs. What are the use cases for entirely anonymous sites that you have in mind?
