"non-viral"? Sounds like late 90s Balmer talking. (I understand being worried about the license of libs you're going to deploy, but the license of cli utils isn't something you need to worry about "infecting" y

The blockchain has nothing to do with dollars. The "value" that disappeared has always been illusory.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that decentralization and cryptography obviously predate all this blockchain nonsense and we shouldn't let the crypto hucksters try to "own" those terms.

I could be wrong, but I don't think storj is "crypto"/web3. It's decentralized and encrypted, but it's not like files are being stored on a blockchain. (I think they did to an ICO way back in the day, but I don

it's not discoverable, but ff does have tab search. You prefix a search in your URL bar with '% ' (so like, if you enter '% esbuild', the "suggestions" in the dropdown will all be your tabs that match

I miss the "golden age" of chat where I could talk to anyone (google/fb/msn messenger/aol?) with my own jabber server. Pidgin was a great client at the time. I've been looking for a modern self-hosted chat sol

The fontconfig patches are a big reason I stay with Ubuntu. Fonts look _so_ much better on Ubuntu than Arch/etc.

I want to like AppImage, but it is just unreasonable that there is no built-in way to trivially install a .desktop file for a given AppImage I've downloaded.

What are people using for a self-hosted "slack" type messenger these days? I have looked at Matrix (which I am interested in but I think needs time to settle right now), Zulip (I really like their threading model but it has been

GTK+ on Rust is a thing that is seeing a lot of active work (see https://gtk-rs.org/ ). I think some of the core gnome stuff has even moved over to rust at this point (like libsrvg).

I have observed this same thing and found it unintuitive, but I think it makes sense? technically your `profile` field could be returning anything (even though you're passing an `id` param in, you potentially could be doing something l

They do still have the ad-blocking stuff built in (although is that much better than Privacy Badger?). One big plus for me is it syncs with my phone (where I do vastly prefer Brave to Chrome).

one thing i have done recently that definitely didn't work is syncing history from phone->desktop. i haven't gone phone->phone in at least a couple years though--good to hear that that's working better.

I think not having it disappear by default is reasonable. My biggest complaint about signal is how hard it is to preserve history (backing up / transferring to new devices). I think the normal expectation is that your data is not goin

The n+1 problem is real but I do think dataloader is a very ergonomic solution. In a simple REST API using your ORM's preload functionality is even more ergonomic, but in more complex cases I've seen a lot of gnarly stuff like bu
