Sometimes I think these guys know something obscure, and then post a question about it just to answer it themselves. SO actually allows this, Q and A from the same account. Some people use sock-puppets though.

The best contributions you can make on GitHub are legitimate ones: start using various libraries etc. and when you find bugs or missing documentation, open an issue or try and provide a PR.

So the line is most accurate towards the end of a lap, and probably quite inaccurate at the start (given how much speed you gain during a coming out of a turn).

What about in the web/startup world? Although not a real meritocracy, proving you can program/hack/design gets you a lot further than a piece of paper with a stamp in it.
