This rant sums up my thoughts exactly. I want firefox to be the most functional tool it can be. Not some presumptuous furry animal that is emotionally and politically charged.

As someone with 5 kids, I can attest to #1. Kids are hard and expensive, but they are also the single most rewarding aspect of my life. I rushed into having kids in my early twenties, and those early years were very difficult. Now that my

Yes, it certainly is. But isn't it interesting that Comcast is almost universally hated? I used the word "exploit" simply because had they treated their customers better and focused on putting their best foot forward, I don

Comcast is notorious for exploiting places that don't have any other real options. Just before Google Fiber was activated in my area, Comcast stepped up their game big time. The only problem is that they had spent years nickel and di

I always felt like those click to unsubscribe links were nothing more than a "please prove to us with certainty that this is an actively used account so we can set a sticky bit on it and sell that info for $$$"

I haven't played a MUD in the last 25 years, but I think I would enjoy playing this one if I had time. In some ways MUDs were much more fun than modern games. I wonder what codebase it derives from.

Bespoke tooling makes me think that the standard tooling is lacking. How does it compare to Rust's tooling?

On the surface, yes, it looks like he has a strong case for asylum. But the judge denied it for some reason, which I assume is based on something more than personal feelings. I am not familiar enough with him or his case to judge for mysel

If he was a citizen, then I would definitely have a problem with it. The problem I see is that asylum claims have been so abused recently that they have become an entitlement rather than an exceptional case. I don't know the specifics

I have no problem with legal immigration - people who have worked hard to become citizens via legal channels, and who love our country. They wouldn't dream of rioting or committing violence, all while waving another country's fla

You're ignoring the massive elephant in the room. The previous administration let millions and millions of completely unvetted and undocumented immigrants into our county, creating an unprecedented crisis. I view Trump's actions

I wanted to use FreeBSD for my home gateway/firewall/dns/dhcp server, but unfortunately my 10 GbE NICs didn't seem to have drivers, so I ended up going with Nix instead. I used FreeBSD many years ago as a workstation, a

For me it was the content to ad ratio. So many of these magazines are filled to the brim with ads, and have very little real content. Why would I spend money to look at a bunch of ads?

Guix solves the biggest problem I have with Nix. The awful Nix language. Scheme is so much nicer it's ridiculous.

I used Nix for two years on basically everything, and I would sum it up as: Nix makes hard things easy, and easy things hard. This post mirrors my own experience and I no longer recommend Nix for desktop use. I agree that it makes a wond

Explicit lifetimes are not super common, and I haven't had any trouble with them causing refactor headaches. Generics obviously do leak, the same way that C++ templates do.

I like Zig as a replacement for C, but not C++ due to its lack of RAII. Rust on the other hand is a great replacement for C++. I see Zig as filling a small niche where allocation failures are paramount - very constrained embedded devices,
