Humanity has hunted all kinds of megafauna (wooly mammoth and co.) to extinction. Also the ongoing mass extinction [0]. The problem is that what is useful to us in second or farther removed degree, we don't value much. [0] https:/

The Marching Cubes triangle lookup table is a 3D Wang-tileset for corner connections, reduced for symmetries. Here is a 2D example of a Wang tileset [0]. [0] http://www.cr31.co.uk/stagecast/wang/2corn.html Edit:

My favorite story is the lemon oil (limonene) test - they did an engine test with it because of political pressure and according to the author, the desert smelled like lemon for 2 months after that.

A salaried position is usually for X hours per month though. An employer that can make you work 24/7 each day of the month is not an employer, they're an owner.

Coherence is also quantifiable - e.g. how many coherent photons travel into a certain direction within a time interval. A resonator increases that amount by many magnitudes. Edit: I mean this in terms of a maximum norm. You get a smaller ma

You cannot tell whether a self-driving car kills less people than human drivers because to get the same statistical significance we have on human driving you'd need 84 billion hours of data from real autonomous driving within a year, a

The insidious thing about burnout is that your ability to recharge and rest is seriously reduced. You need more time to regain less energy compared to before a burnout.

After reading up a bit more I think I was too hasty with that statement. Getting a practical solar capacity is quite a lot cheaper than I imagined for many latitudes.

I think it's sad though that people want to have an armored car that looks like a stealth fighter. It's also strange that you can sell it in a context of 'being prepared', with the offroad capability and everything - I d

I think there is some cost issue in making the car armored. With a sandwich material it would be way more feasible to put together planar cuts than to cold form them. Armor usually is pretty stiff.

Interesting. In my mind as well, it's too early for manned missions - everything we'd do will be similar to Apollo again: Short visits to show we can, then there's no plan to actually turn these achievements into a self-fundi

It's absolutely right, but I'd argue we should still send mostly robots from the moon. There are enough people on Earth to look at interesting things in the returned data and seize the initiative once anything new pops up.

Robotic missions have all the mental skills of humans, the decision making in a robotic mission is on-par if not even superior because of time constraints being virtually absent. What robots lack as of yet are the motor skills. Edit: I'

Why should we send people further than orbit, rather than robots? Robotic missions have been huge successes - you could have teams of people lead many robotic missions instead of one very limited human visit.
