For Halloween they should fill it with fake bodies and set the lights to green. Matrix battery!

No but dedicated server prices will likely drop or at least you'll get more for your money

That doesn't answer the question at all. I suspect most components are already horizontally scalable, if not, which ones? That would be an interesting discussion for HN.

On the plus side, lots of cheap servers to swoop up :)

Gas tax is how we originally built the whole highway system actually (that and bonds).

by winrid 2mo ago
Yes, but for tires, they explicitly make exceptions for summer tires etc here.

Probably the weirdest thing about this is the state doing something that results in it getting less tax money. This was lobbied for by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Union of Concerned Scientists.

It's "on average", so no, you still can. And what are they gonna do if you just go to the tire store and say I want X tires? So of course none of this will be enforced. It's just to provide the little leaf indicator.

Yeah, the Philips EyeComfort Flicker Free bulbs. Which HD used to sell. Now it's 90% a couple other brands. The problem is landlords and normal people just go to home depot so every time I move it's a giant replace bulbs fiasco

by winrid 2mo ago
Same. It seems like they will just give them one leaf marking and not outlaw them outright, though?

TIL we have LED lightbulb rules but every bulb in home depot has terrible PWM that's bad for your eyes. Another 20 years and maybe the government will finally address that. On the tires topic, I'm fine with this as long as they do

Personally, Fastcomments and all my projects can easily be switched to a self hosted provider, keeping GitHub as a read only mirror. It's probably a couple days work with today's tools.

Pretty sure this is caused by trying to move to Azure (and I'd bet like $1000 partially due to trying to move DBs to network backed disk instances)

Our nuclear subs alone are a significant deterrent (as long as people think you'll use them).
75.
by winrid 2mo ago
Ah ok true, I forgot I use it for serial stuff very occasionally too.

Is there any advantage of screen over tmux? I've kind of switched, I don't see a reason to go back.

The benefit of per row is that you can tag additional info like reserved user id etc, which you would have to track somewhere anyway.

I live in the bay area and buy a phone maybe every 3 years? Why do people waste so much money :D

I have win 10 iot running on devices with 4gb of ram (they mostly have to run one dedicated app) and it works fine!

I think in this case it's HVAC?

Here's the part worth knowing - it's only going to get worse.

They can still target four nines (0.9999)

Use the system font stack

by winrid 2mo ago
Pretty sure if you didn't run the DB on networked disks you would have been fine.

Win10 iot ent runs on even 3rd gen i3s very well...

Your computer is fast and can display hundreds of thousands of divs a second. :)

I've been building watch.ly[0] which intercepts all network /fs traffic on the machine originating from the agent and pings you for approval. [0] https://watch.ly

It's embedded. Single machine. But it runs their forum/ticketing thing so good enough for that I guess :)

Probably worth saying it's a fork of orientdb from like 2010.
