NB: This was added "later" that is why tons of projects were grandfathered in, because they were already called phpMyAdmin, phpMyFAQ, etc. (IIRC at least)

The house my parents bought in the early 90s (after local inflation) would cost between 1/3 and 1/4 of what such a house goes for right now. Big surprise I didn't buy one, but I suppose with 2 incomes we would have bought one

Never been in that professional area but around 2000 InDesign (on Windows) was probably the 2nd name you had heard after QuarkXPress. I mean I can't really speak with authority how much that (first IIRC) version of InDesign differed fr

Sometimes it's also just the individuals. We have a small playground here and for a number of years there were exactly 3 people being loud and obnoxious. One mom and her two sons. None of the other kids ever bothered me. :P

You can also have a (maybe wrong) sense of familiarity that feels like it makes sense. I'm ESL but after so many years of daily contact I find writing stuff in English easier than in my native German. Never lived anywhere else. I'

Not exactly sure what you mean (in German) but just learning about them and using them correctly are 2 completely different things. I mean, you could maybe ignore the use of going a -> ä for plural forms, I would argue that learning all

Some of us had found many uses for our computers while they were offline, so I don't really get why you're implying they are useless without using the internet. And I'm saying that as someone who only had access to a computer

Comparing this mac that can be found on ebay at any given time with a 1401 feels a bit like comparing it with getting one of the first steam trains. I am surprised they made 12000 (according to wikipedia).

Man that's mean for old Shadowrun. Base rulebook is huge, and then you have like 4 additional ones - because it's so old that stuff was not incorporated yet. But I guess first of all the whole party uses the same 5 books and if we

Even after 30 years of playing Shadowrun we still occasionally debate whether a fire ball with radius X will ignite the fuel in the driving vehicle. At least in this case it's a minor detail because iirc the rules actually state the fi

No, this is older than the xkcd. I think it goes back to 1999-2003, when we had hoped we'd ever get a fourth Star Wars movie.

How do you overcome a wrong observation of a local maximum though (e.g. in your club maybe)? I only experienced something like this once, late 90s. We thought of ourselves as pretty ok StarCraft players until we got some visitor to a lan pa

Ah, "spotted hog", as my English teacher (6th grade or so?, ESL) had said: for some reason this is one term most pupils will remember, no matter how unimportant. Guess he was right, or maybe a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I think it also highly depends on where you're from. Traditionally in Bavaria you'd have used "Du/Ihr" in shops or on the streets colloquially even decades ago, and yet from time to time you'd ran into people (

I refrained from getting it - but it's been free for the last 25 years. Uncommon name + ending in a relatively uncommon TLD. I have <mylastname.>de and I'm happy enough with that.

I mean I know people value your uptime, but isn't that simply a case of getting the order in writing, a quick CC'd email to the CEO and then putting the site offline as advertised? Some people just don't learn any other way.

The problem with this approach is that (esp. for hobby projects) updating stuff is a bit tedious. Let's say you have a relatively bare bones project in Rails or a PHP framework you have a couple of dependencies that people usually use

I'm not saying it's a realistic view, but I had hoped without any inclusions from NPM there would exist a couple more clean-room (or at least decoupled) implementations of things in TS, leaving everything JS behind.

yes of course, more people probably wanted node compat than people explicitly didn't want it (like the person who you replied to, and me too). You have to decide where to go and apparently not being a niche product was one the reasons,
