This actually took a while to grasp the concept of. Where I'm living (so far from the coast that it might as well be landlocked) it took a while of eyeballing on a map, but I did find one angle where it's not kinda common sense wh

OK, that mental overhead of "last used browser" would drive me nuts. My solution is: The system has a default browser that opens default links. On my work machine I have a different browser where I am for example logged in to my p

As an ESL, both jerk and cheers are 100% words I only learned by interacting with people of unknown or questionable language skills online in the last 20 years, so yeah, make of that what you will. Probably being part of the problem :) (Usu

The last time the company I worked for was hosting code on Github, Actions did not exist yet and for personal stuff copying some 3 liners was fine, I'd hardly call that "using". "Github Actions might be over, so not wort

Also if for some reason you get DDoSed you can probably switch that VPS a lot quicker than getting a new static IP at home, if at all.

Interesting, we had something similar in Germany in the late 90s. Had to dial in with a client and they had a chat, newsgroups/forums and internal mail. - RivalNet http://web.archive.org/web/19980515163616/htt

Back when you couldn't buy most idSoftware games here I had to go out of my way to let an online buddy of mine with a non-German Steam account buy and gift the collection to me. So it does happen. And I even got quite some duplicates a

Scala unfortunately feels a lot like Perl. Three people write in four different styles. I mean, that was my beginner impression and at least half of the Scala developers I asked about this agreed. Also I just never found the improvement ove

My experience for smaller companies is more like: - if you have GMail, people(esp engineering) use docs and 1-n people have Excel on top - if you are all in on MS, then of course no one will use GDocs

I think you might be biased by where you live. In Germany an electrician's apprenticeship is ~3.5 years (and can sometimes be shortened). So while I am not an electrician and have no deeper insight than what friends who are told me, I

But that doesn't make it necessarily untrue for the person you replied to. People have different requirements and I heard tons of stories of "this doesn't work, that doesn't work". It's been slowly improving, b

Costs in the US have always puzzled me, so the cost/use factor is completely off. Here in Germany I would still recommend getting a BSc in CS if you're interested in the topic.

If it's doing 10% of chore work, I am not worried. I don't think I'm being paid to 1:1 convert a dumb crud app or rest api from one language to another, although of course you do that once a decade in a typical job.
